FERRIES & FLIGHTS to Kefalonia
plane
Fights: there are regular direct flights between the UK and Kefalonia during the summer season, low-cost carriers usually commence flights early April, package tour companies mostly commence flights around the first weekend in May. Direct flights from Kefalonia to the UK reduce in number during October and cease end of October / early November, seats on the last flights back to the UK can be in great demand.

Companies operating direct flights to Kefalonia are few and UK airports served are few in comparison with destinations that are even more popular, such as Corfu or Zakynthos. Flights operated, and flight times, can change year to year and flights booked for May and October may be 'consolidated' depending on actual demand for seats, i.e. the flight times / UK airport / airline, etc, may be changed at short notice. Airlines operating direct flights from UK airports to Kefalonia include

ferry Ferries: for the adventurous explorer, ferry boats are the traditional way to travel. They are reliable, popular and still comparatively inexpensive. Kefalonia is connected to mainland Greece via ferries from Patras, Kyllini and Astakos, while local ferries connect Kefalonia with Ithaka, Levkas and Zakynthos. Ferries from Italy call into Sami during high season.

There’s also a local service that connects Argostoli with Lixouri. In low season the service is hourly, in high season (June - September) every half an hour.

Queue on the quayside, reverse on, leave the car on the car deck and either sit in the air-conditioned lounge or out in the sun. The crossing takes almost thirty minutes and is inexpensive,  for this ferry you pay on board, for longer journeys on ferries you buy tickets at the office or kiosk at the port and, for safety and security, identification may be required before ferry tickets can be purchased.

Ferries are generally pretty punctual so allow enough time to buy the tickets (there may be a queue, especially in high season) and to get yourself (and car, and passengers) boarded.

Generally, the ship’s name will usually be spelt in Greek and English, e.g. Πηνελόπη / Penelope. However, the pronunciation may be different, e.g., the F/B Πηνελόπη is pronounced Pinny-lóppy, not Pen-el-o-pee (Penelope). The Greek word for port or harbour is λιμάνι (limáni).
