Stiffer fines for travel ban violators

The Greek government has doubled fines and included removal or car plates for anyone who travels without reason for Orthodox Easter this weekend.

The stricter controls will go into effect at 9 p.m. on Saturday (April 18) to midnight on Easter Monday (April 20), throughout Greece, and will incur a fine of 300 euros, up from 150 euros so far, while their car plates will be removed temporarily.

The only exception is for people assisting others.

Greece to use drones to stop crowds gathering for Orthodox Easter
Government also plans to contain spread of Covid-19 by banning weekend travel

Greek authorities will deploy drones, monitor churches and ramp up street patrols as they prepare the nation for a very different Orthodox Easter in the age of Covid-19.

The spectre of worshippers defying strict bans on movement to mark the most sacred holiday of the year has posed an unprecedented challenge for officials.

“This Easter is different. We will not go to our villages. We will not roast in our yards. We will not go to our churches. And, of course, we will not gather in the homes of relatives and friends,” the government spokesman Stelios Petsas said. “For us to continue being together, this year we stay apart.”

Traditionally, Greeks flock to ancestral homes in the countryside, filing into churches and chapels in raucous celebration of the most significant religious event in the Orthodox calendar, one that never passes without firecrackers, spit-roasted lamb, music and dancing.

Although a nation better known for its distain for authority has elected to defer to dictates announced in response to the epidemic, there are signs people may have reached a psychological cut-off point.

Rogue clerics and unrulier Greeks have vowed to mark Easter in spirited fashion – even if, thanks to social distancing, Good Friday processions, church services and family gatherings are forbidden.

Greece Expected to Tighten Covid-19 Measures for May Day Weekend

Quarantine measures, similar to those that were introduced to curb the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19) during the Easter holiday, are expected to apply for the upcoming May Day three-day weekend (May 1-3) in Greece.

Greece went into lockdown and introduced its non-essential movement ban on March 23. The ban has been extended until April 27.

Greek Deputy Minister of Civil Protection and Crisis Management Nikos Hardalias on Wednesday said that the measures for non-essential movement will remain in place until April 27 but will not end completely the next day.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is expected to make announcements next week regarding the government’s plan to ease some of the restrictions in the country.

Speaking on SKAI, Minister of State Giorgos Gerapetritis said that the process of reopening the economy will take two months (ie the whole of May and June).

According to the minister, in the first phase, courts and registry offices will reopen from April 27.

“From May 4, we will have the gradual openings of small shops and other services,” Gerapetritis said, adding that the tourism season will start in June.

“Tourist destinations have remained largely unscathed and will be extremely popular in the summer,” the minister said.

Covid-19 outbreak: Greek govt proceeds with first substantial relaxation of restrictions on non-essential movement, public assembly

The Greek government on Tuesday afternoon announced a relaxation of imposed restrictions in the country aimed to prevent exposure to the Covid-19 virus, with prohibitions on the non-essential movement lifted as of Monday - albeit only with the prefecture where one resides.

Traveling outside one's prefecture, such as the greater Athens area, will be lifted in two weeks, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said, during a nationally televised address.

Additionally, outdoor exercise and swimming in seas will be allowed, although organized beaches will remain closed.

Not all retailers will open on Monday, but only stores selling electronic goods, sportswear, along with hair salons and barber shops.

All retailers will be allowed to open as of May 11, with large shopping malls to reopen on June. 1.

In all cases, social distancing and a ceiling on the number of customers per footage also envisioned.

Lessons for high school seniors will commence on May 11, followed a week later for the other two high school levels.

Greeks rush to hairdressers, florists, beaches, as virus lockdown eases

Greeks were finally allowed to get their hair cut, buy books and flowers and even venture back onto the beaches on Monday as part of a gradual easing of lockdown restrictions imposed six weeks ago to curb the spread of the new coronavirus.

Police conducted inspections on buses, in metro stations and shops to make sure people were wearing the mandatory protective masks and respecting social distancing rules. Municipal workers sprayed bus stops and other public venues.

Greeks no longer need a form stating a valid reason – such as shopping for food or medicine, or taking physical exercise – for permission to leave their homes.

Schools, restaurants and bars are expected to reopen later this month. Hotels will start to open from June 1.

Some news I have been waiting for, that clarifies use of private boats.

Amateur fishing, sea swimming officially allowed again in Greece

Head of Civil Protection Nikos Hardalias announced on Monday evening that amateur fishing in small boats is allowed again and boats with a length of up to 7 meters can take passengers for a swim under certain conditions. However, the boats are not allowed to dock anywhere else except the port where they are registered.

The exception for amateur fishing and swimming are allowed as of May 5, 2020, Hardalias said.

According to a decision issued by the Shipping Ministry also on Monday, “activities such as swimming in the sea,, use of private (non-motorized) marine recreation facilities, fishing from land, are allowed, while the use of motorized marine recreational boats, or those requiring the use of a motorized boat continue to be banned.”

The Shipping Ministry extended the ban on departure and arrival of private pleasure boats and professional tourist ships in Greek territory from 5. May 2020 until 18. May 2010.

The decision refers also to banning of non-residents to travel to the islands.

So far, there seems to be no decision allowing water sports again.

Restaurants and cafes set to reopen on May 25

As part of the government’s effort to expedite the return to normalcy for businesses in Greece, the competent state health authorities have approved the opening of restaurants, bars and cafes on May 25.

Meanwhile on Monday – and two weeks earlier than originally estimated – shopping malls, department stores and discount outlets will reopen.

Based on the guidelines announced by the Development Ministry, the use of a protective mask for staff and consumers in public spaces is strongly recommended.

The use of masks by staff and customers inside stores is mandatory.

The Greek government may make mask-wearing mandatory in more indoor public places, in the coming days, if deemed necessary by medical experts to limit the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19).

Greece on late Sunday extended the rule – until August 4 – on wearing face masks in all Greek supermarkets by staff and customers.

Face masks mandatory in enclosed spaces

With cases of the coronavirus steadily rising, face masks will as of Saturday be compulsory in all public indoor spaces as part of a fresh batch of measures announced by Deputy Civil Protection Minister Nikos Hardalias Friday.

The mask requirement applies to churches too, he said, while he also strongly recommended face coverings in crowded outdoor areas.

The deputy minister further announced the suspension of visiting hours at hospitals and care homes until August 15.

As of Monday, a maximum of 100 guests will be allowed to attend weddings and christenings, while a ban on religious festivals has been extended to August 31, he said.

What’s more, between August 3 and 9, entertainment venues will only be allowed to have customers that are seated. This applies to clubs, live music venues, bars, restaurants, cafes etc.

Measures for maintaining safe distances on beaches are extended until August 31, as are those on private leisure boats and commercial tourist ships.

The total number of cases climbed to 4,477 Friday. Three more deaths were also reported, pushing the total tally to 206.

Greece makes masks compulsory on ferry decks after rise in COVID-19 cases

Greece will make mask-wearing compulsory on the decks of ferries sailing to its islands, extending the requirement beyond indoor public spaces, after a sudden rise in coronavirus infections that could put its crucial tourism season at risk.

The new measure will go into effect from Tuesday until Aug. 18, as the summer holiday season hits its peak.

Greece 'formally' in second wave of outbreak

Greece is “formally” in the midst of a second wave of the coronavirus pandemic, one of the country’s top infectious disease experts has told the Guardian, writes Helena Smith, the Guardian’s Athens correspondent.

After recording its highest number of positive diagnoses ever – a record 203 cases on Sunday – the nation has reached a critical juncture in its ability to contain further spread of the virus.

“We can say that Greece has formally entered a second wave of the epidemic. This is the point that we could win or lose the battle,” said Gkikas Magiorkinis, assistant professor of hygiene and epidemiology at Athens university.

Until this month, Greek health officials appeared to have the epidemic under control but Magiorkinis said the abrupt rise, compounded by a sudden jump in the number requiring intubation, up from nine on 1 August to 22 last night, left no doubt that the highly contagious disease was working its way through society.

Greece Pushes Second Covid-19 Lockdown to December 14

Greece announced on Thursday that it would be extending the country’s second Covid-19 lockdown by a week to 6am on December 14 allowing in meantime the opening of retail stores selling holiday goods.

This is the second extension of the containment rules beyond initially announced dates after failure of current measures to bring down the number of daily recorded Covid-19 cases and deaths resulting in increasing pressure on the health care system.
