Alexis Tsipras may call early election if his Syriza party is defeated
Greek prime minister declares European parliament poll a vote of confidence in his government

The Greek prime minister, Alexis Tsipras, is the first to say he relishes a fight. And, true to form, he upped the ante on Friday when he declared this weekend’s European parliament poll a vote of confidence in his government.

In comments that sent ripples through a political arena already at fever pitch, the leftist leader hinted that early elections could be in the offing if, as surveys suggest, his Syriza party is beaten at the ballot box.

“On Sunday, people may not be voting for a government, but they will be voting on the policies that will govern the country in the coming years,” he said, referring to tax cuts and pension benefits announced in the run-up to the contest. “If these measures are rejected, all prospects are open.”

The declaration was interpreted as a last-ditch bid to consolidate disaffected voters, who are also casting ballots in municipal and regional elections on the same day.

General elections expected to be held on June 30

Quote
The snap elections announced late Sunday night by Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras after the defeat his party suffered in the European Elections will most likely be held on June 30, according to sources.

In the month prior to the elections, there will not be a caretaker government, as was the case in the summer of 2015, but Tsipras will simply appoint new ministers of Justice and Interior, the same sources said.

He is also expected to select a new government spokesman to replace the incumbent Dimitris Tzanakopoulos.

Tsipras is to chair a session of ruling SYRIZA’s central committee on Monday afternoon.

The committee is to convene at 7 p.m. under the prime minister who is to make a speech expected to focus on the disappointing electoral outcome and the challenges facing the leftists.

With 87.12 percent of the votes counted, SYRIZA was trailing conservative New Democracy by 9.44 percentage points.
