Perching on the side of an old power station chimney with St Paul’s Cathedral to the north and the Shard, Europe’s tallest building, to the east is not where you might expect to glimpse the world’s fastest bird. Yet Tate Modern, and London landmarks including Battersea Power Station and the Houses of Parliament, have been home for several years to peregrine falcons. A surprising flash of the wild in the heart of the city, the powerful bird of prey is also a specialised hunter of feral pigeons, considered such an urban pest that in 2003 a ban was imposed on feeding them in Trafalgar Square.

With cities’ abundant food sources and tall buildings providing a predator-free equivalent of the species’ traditional cliff-side home, the raptor’s success has extended far beyond the capital. Having colonised urban areas from Aberdeen to Cardiff, ecologists now believe it is only a matter of time before peregrine falcons are breeding in every major UK town and city.
“All those born and bred in cities, that’s their habitat that they’ve grown up in. When they’re drifting around the country, they find little towns and cities elsewhere … and that’s what they’re used to,” says David Goode, a veteran ecologist and author of a new book, Nature in Town and Cities. “That’s why I say it won’t be long until they’re in every place.”

Read somewhere that there's maybe fifty breeding pairs in the Netherlands, as it's pretty flat I'm thinking they're nesting in spires and high towers.

Followed the link and read the rest of the article, very interesting, thanks.

Pretty certain I saw four eggs in there a moment ago. Mum was having a shuffle around, back on the eggs before I could grab a screen shot.

Edit: You just beat me to it, BT!

Wow! Mum(?) was sat on the eggs, kept changing position every ten minutes or so, then got off the eggs and hopped onto the ledge making one heck of a racket in the process, dad(?) suddenly appeared and mum flew off, dad took over on the four eggs. All happened so quickly I couldn't grab a snap of both birds together, here's dad about to take his turn on the eggs:

Just checked the Norwich Cathedral Webcam and a bird is sitting on the eggs but making a very funny noise.  Doesn't sound right to me but what do I know?!

Yep, just had a look at http://upp.hawkandowl.org/norwich-peregrines/norwich-cathedral-peregrine-live-web-cam-2015/ and the bird on the nest sounds almost like it's got constant hiccups, sounds rather like a squeaky hinge. Other than that, seems pretty alert.

Maybe the one sitting on the eggs fancies a bit of a break and is calling the other one to take over!

Just slightly off topic:

A pair of nesting ospreys is threatening the future of Scotland’s biggest music festival, T in the Park.

The birds have been spotted close to Strathallan Castle in Perthshire, where the festival is due to take place in July. As a protected species, it is illegal to disturb them during breeding season.

Feeding time! Look closely and mum/dad has a big chunk of meet at its feet. Three chicks, one egg. Didn't think any would've hatched so soon, reckon the fourth could be cracking it open today/tomorrow:

*Think* still only three chicks, not sure where the egg is, maybe just out of camera.

  Well spotted, Hawkeye!

Couple of screenshots just captured. Looks like it's lunchtime: dad feeding the chicks - can only make out three bundles of fluff (maybe Bob can give us an accurate count!) and no egg:

Dad taking off with his lunch, as soon as he'd flown mum landed and sat on the chicks:

Just had a look and the chicks are getting bigger by the day. The nesting area is beginning to look like a battle field with feathers, blood and bones all over the place.
