Hundreds of thousands of energy customers face 50pc increase in bills next month

Hundreds of thousands of customers could see their energy bills soar by more than £400 a year when their fixed rate tariffs end this month.

There are 16 popular tariffs from seven suppliers due to expire on April 30, including npower, FirstUtility and Co-operative Energy, according to data from uSwitch, the price comparison service.

Households that fail to choose another tariff will automatically be rolled onto the provider's standard variable tariffs, which are usually the most expensive.
