Average first-time buyer needs £41,000 salary

The average first-time buyer needs a minimum income of £41,000 in order to secure a mortgage, almost double the UK’s average wage of £22,000.

A report published by KPMG this week found that the divergence between house prices and wages has grown so wide that affordability is now an issue for all aspiring buyers unless they have very high earnings - or inherit money.

First-time buyers in London have the toughest time getting on the property ladder. They need to earn a whopping £77,000 in order to buy their first home. In reality the average worker earns just £28,000.

Middle-class shoppers warned to watch for Fairtrade fraudsters
Counterfeit food labels are a growing fraud meaning shoppers may be buying fake Fairtrade or organic products

One company supplying Buckingham Palace was found to be buying non-organic food from Tesco and Waitrose, repackaging it as organic and selling it at twice the price.

Slightly strange title. Are ethical working class buyers too savvy to fall for it, or doesn't it matter if they get ripped off?

Greece has made a 200-million-euro (148 million pound) interest payment to the International Monetary Fund that fell due on Wednesday, a Greek official familiar with the matter told Reuters.

"It's done, the money is on its way," the official said, on condition of anonymity.

...but a 750 million euro payment to the IMF that falls due on May 12 is expected to be a bigger struggle.

It's the Telegraph so there are three possible assumptions: the main one is that only the middle class buy Fairtrade (usually at Waitrose or exceptionally if in a terrible rush after taking Jocasta and Tarquin to their playdate, at Sainsburys) and the others are that the working class don't read the paper (not entirely true) and the other is as you suggest Maik that if Chardonnay or Lee happen by chance to buy something Fairtrade in their local Lidl or Aldi (which may now be graced by Telegraph readers) they are unlikely to do so again.

(Having said that the Telegraph is a far better paper than the Mail IMHO!! )

I think the word is "cockneys".

It's likely to increase as the bedroom tax and benefit caps bite as for many people in London the rent element of benefits is by far the largest.

A bridge too far!  The barricades are being erected as I  write.  Anyone trying to get in will be stopped at the NEC and kept in one of the halls until a return to the sarf can be arranged.  They will have to put up with the appalling sanitation.  If anybody objects we will put them on a train to Manchester.

:nein: Bit like saying Ari's a European, therefore he's a kraut.
Well, it is if you're a Londoner not born within five miles of St. Mary le Bow!

Not many of us "suveners" left in London unless it's southern Bangladesh, Baltic States, Turkey or Somalia  :oki:

Maik, you know that the last time I cast an aspersion at that city a certain native thereof threatened me with physical violence (him and 50 mates!) the next time I set foot on Kef so I avoid making any comments that could be construed to it or an inhabitants detriment.  Although I am usually safe if I use a multisyllabic vocabulary.

Is the mystery woman in Pulp's 'Common People' really Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis' wife?

More to the point, Ari: any truth in the rumour that you taught Yannis Varoufakis the gentle art of diplomacy?  :hmm:

I tried but he was too soft.  Good in a pub fight though.
