Greek Red Cross-ed off

The International Red Cross believes that the debts created by the Greek Red Cross, the entanglement of former board members to scandals, the recriminations between them, the unpaid employees as well as the huge debts of Henry Dunant’s Hospital, are not consistent with the international image of the Red Cross organization. Thus, the International Red Cross has started a process for the Greek Red Cross’ elimination, namely the removal of its badge.

Hellenic Red Cross Expelled From World Federation

The Hellenic Red Cross (HRC) was expelled from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) after the latter said the Greek chapter failed to fulfill commitments required to restore its credibility.

The new board elected in June was transitional, with a limited mandate to prepare and adopt the new statute, but also to organize the second elections.

However, the board failed to approve the new statute by September or hold new elections, resulting in the expulsion.

The HRC’s has seen other controversies as its former president, Andreas Martinis, is accused of embezzling millions of euros in state aid, as well as money laundering.

Greek Red Cross says no notification yet over its alleged suspension by Geneva-based IRC

The Greek affiliate of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement (IRC), the Hellenic Red Cross, on Thursday stressed that it has not received any official notification by the venerable Geneva-based organization of its suspension.

Numerous press reports in Athens earlier in the day reported that the IRC was suspending its Greece affiliate, ostensibly over allegations of past mismanagement and failure by the Hellenic Red Cross to revise its charter towards making the organization more open to its volunteer force, among others, as well as holding elections for its board.

In a hastily released press statement, the Hellenic Red Cross noted that "we'd like to inform that we have not received any decision so far."
