Large blue butterfly flutters in Cotswolds for first time in 150 years

The biggest reintroduction to date of the large blue has led to the rare butterfly flying on a Cotswold hillside where it has not been seen for 150 years.

About 750 butterflies emerged on to Rodborough Common in Gloucestershire this summer after 1,100 larvae were released last autumn following five years of innovative grassland management to create optimum habitat.

The globally endangered butterfly now flies in greater number in Britain than anywhere else in the world, four decades after it became extinct in the country.

Prof Jeremy Thomas and David Simcox... first had to understand its unique lifecycle, with tiny caterpillars dropping off wild thyme and being taken underground by the red ant, Myrmica sabuleti, which is duped into believing that the parasitic larva is one of their own.

The ants carry it into their nests to protect the caterpillar, even “singing” to it, before it turns from herbivore into carnivore and feasts on ant grubs through the winter until it is ready to pupate. The butterfly emerges from underground the following summer.

Greek military put on high alert as tensions with Turkey rise
Dispute over exploration of energy reserves in eastern Mediterranean escalates

Greece has placed its military forces on high alert, recalling its naval and air force officers from holiday, as tensions with Turkey over exploration of potentially lucrative offshore energy reserves escalate in the eastern Mediterranean.

With Ankara dispatching the Oruç Reis, a drillship escorted by gunboats, to conduct seismic research in contested waters, Athens stepped up calls for Turkey to stop the “illegal” activities, intensifying a diplomatic offensive that has prompted the US, EU, France and Israel to express growing anxiety over the situation.

British holidaymaker forced to quarantine in Greece after testing positive for coronavirus

A British holidaymaker and their family have been forced to self-isolate for two weeks in Greece after testing positive for coronavirus.

The traveller, who was asymptomatic, was tested at Corfu airport as part of the country’s health screenings and random testing measures for all arrivals.

They then headed to the Tui Blue Atlantica Grand Mediterraneo Resort, an all-inclusive seafront hotel.

Although test results are generally available within 24 hours, the holidaymaker did not receive the news that they had Covid-19 until four days later, on 7 August, reports the Mirror.

Their entire party was told to isolate within their rooms, before being moved to a special quarantine hotel. They must remain there for 14 days.
