UK weather forecast: Britain faces new Beast from the East in what could be one of coldest winters in 30 years
First two months of 2020 could rank as seventh coldest in three decades, scientists say

So say some scientists, so far the Met Office reckon it could be a pretty normal winter (see end of article).

UK weather: ‘Danger to life’ flood warnings issued as country braces for torrential rain

Danger to life warnings have been issued as parts of Britain face two more days of heavy downpours ahead of snow and the aftermath of Hurricane Lorenzo.

A yellow weather warning for rain is in place until midnight on Monday covering Wales and the West Midlands, and dozens of flood warnings and alerts have also been issued.

A further warning for heavy showers is also in place from 6am to 8pm on Tuesday covering the south of England, South Wales, the Midlands and parts of East Anglia.

Thundery downpours with the possibility of hail are expected across the South West, moving to the South East by the afternoon.

The remnants of Hurricane Lorenzo, a former category 5 storm in the central Atlantic, could also cause high winds to reach the UK by the end of the week.

UK weather forecast: More than two inches of rain expected to fall as severe warnings issued for England
Heavy rainfall brings risk of flooding and travel disruption

Three flood warnings in southwest England and more than 30 flood alerts have been put in place, causing fears of travel disruption at the start of the week.

The Met Office has issued a warning for heavy rain across central and southern England, including London, Birmingham and Manchester, for Monday.

Between 40-60mm of rain could fall in some parts of England, forecasters said, with up to 25mm expected widely.

Although it is too early to predict which exact areas will see the heaviest rain, the Met Office said southern parts of England are most likely to see “significant rainfall”.

UK weather: Homes evacuated after mudslide as ‘danger to life’ warnings issued

Homes have been evacuated and roads flooded as torrential rain plunged the north of England into chaos, with more severe weather expected over the coming days.

Residents of 35 homes in Mansfield were urged to leave as a precaution after a mudslide threatened to engulf their properties, while some homes in South Yorkshire have been submerged by nearly 10 feet of water, with people forced to abandon their cars.

Severe flooding left hundreds of people trapped in Yorkshire’s largest shopping mall ahead of an annual Christmas concert on Thursday evening.

Thousands arrived at Rotherham’s Meadowhall mall to enjoy a line-up of former X Factor singers and DJs, but many soon found themselves trapped as the fast-flowing River Don dramatically burst its banks, compromising several routes around the complex.

Soon any remaining exits were gridlocked and police were advising people not to leave the shopping centre, handing out sleeping bags on the first floor as flood defences were erected around the complex and contractors worked to pump out floodwater.

Flood warning expires this morning but still plenty of water around.

SP-RING IN THE NEW YEAR UK weather – Hottest New Year in 178 years due to ‘warmer than Corfu’ heat bubble

BRITAIN is poised for the warmest New Year's Eve in 178 years as a 1,000-mile wide 'tropical plume' sweeps in bringing temperatures topping 16C.

Forecasters say a high pressure front moving up from the Azores, off Portugal, could bring much-needed warm weather for swathes of the UK.

The Met Office forecasts highs of around 16C up to and including New Year's Eve on Tuesday.

The average for this time of year in England and Wales is a chilly 7 to 9C.

UK weather: Met Office records hottest ever December day amid climate crisis

The UK has recorded its hottest December day ever.

Temperatures of 18.7C were recorded in Scotland over the weekend, the highest ever measured in the UK during December.

The Met Office said the recording taken from Achfary was “provisional” and still needs to be quality controlled. But if validated it will be “the highest temperature officially recorded in the UK during December”, it said.

The previous record had stood since 1948, when a temperature of 18.3C was recorded in Achnashellach in Scotland, on 2 December.

This year has already seen the hottest winter day on record, when a temperature of 21.2C was taken at Kew Gardens in February. It also saw the hottest day on record in the UK, when 38.7C was registered at Cambridge University Botanic Gardens on 25 July.

UK weather: warnings for gales and large waves as Storm Brendan sweeps in
Seafronts may take a battering and travel disruption is predicted, with winds reaching up to 80mph

Yellow weather warnings are in place for Northern Ireland, much of the western half of the UK and the north-east of Scotland from 12pm on Monday to midnight.

Frank Saunders, of the Met Office, said the UK and Ireland will turn increasingly windy throughout Monday as the storm, named by Irish forecaster Met Eireann, sweeps in.

He said: “It’s going to be windy across the western half of the UK, with gusts reaching 60-70mph along Irish Sea coastlines, the west of Scotland and perhaps some English Channel coasts – maybe even 80mph in a few exposed places.”

Looking further ahead to the rest of next week, he said: “It looks like it’s going to stay very unsettled with the potential for further disruptive weather in places.”

UK weather: Temperatures to plummet as low as -7C as big chill hits country
'This weekend’s freezing temperatures put some of our most vulnerable Londoners at risk,' mayor Sadiq Khan warns

Temperatures are expected to plunge to sub-zero this weekend with lows of -7C in some areas, prompting emergency homeless shelters to be opened across the country.

UK weather forecast: Met Office warnings issued for entire country with 80mph winds likely to cause power cuts and travel disruption
'Winds of this strength across a wide area have the potential to produce disruption to transport, along with some coastal impacts'

The Met Office has warned of very strong winds across nearly the whole of the UK that may cause travel disruptions and power cuts, as well as damage to buildings.

Gusts up to 80mph over exposed coastal areas and hills, and up to 60mph in inland areas are expected, especially in the north and west of the UK.

In its warning, the Met Office said: “Heavy rain will be an additional hazard, especially over western hills. Winds of this strength across a wide area have the potential to produce disruption to transport, along with some coastal impacts, especially in the west.”

Yellow warnings for wind are in place for both Saturday and Sunday, with Sunday being the windier of the two.

Snow warnings persist as Government commits aid after Storm Ciara

The effects of Storm Ciara continue to be felt as Sunday’s rain and wind give way to hazardous levels of snow and ice across the UK.

Heavy snow has started to fall in some regions after the storm disrupted flights, ferries and trains throughout Britain and the Republic of Ireland.

Met Office meteorologist Bonnie Diamond said: “Storm Ciara has cleared but it is still windy. There is the risk of snow and ice depending on where you are.

“There is very much hazardous weather still around.”
