Weather report

Rain, high winds wreak havoc on Ionian islands

Torrential rain and strong winds in western Greece on Friday caused widespread damage to the electricity and road networks of the islands of Cephalonia and Ithaca, while also flooding a cemetery in Corfu.

Power was restored around 7 p.m. in Cephalonia and Ithaca, where the task of assessing the damage from floods to homes, stores and other infrastructure has started.

The amount of rainfall was very variable in different parts of the island. Argostoli recorded over 210 mms, whereas Spartia recorded 110 mms. At Valeriano, I recorded 113 mms.

Well, would you believe this. Whilst all this was going on during the day I noticed at the top of St Georges Castle people standing under the flag having their photo taken, in the rain with lightning in the background. Brains, I don't know where some people keep them.

They leave their brains at passport control.
This year the thing that made me angry was people thowing fish in to the Turtles in Argostoli harbour then trying to get them to the harbour wall and srtoke them.
Dont they know they are wild animals and need treating with respect. Turtles dont eat whole fish

Never seen any of them bother with the fish that swim around them but they seem attracted to the scraps tossed over the sides of the fishing boats. Seen them eat the clams attached to the quayside wall, makes me cringe when tourists let their kids sit on the edge to be nearer the turtles, all those little toes dangling down!

Turtles are actually vegetarians. There is a big problem in Argostoli as too much fish can poison them.
Always look on the bright side of life.

Looks like the army have been called in to help with the clear up, soldiers and some earth moving equipment arrived on the ferry from Kyllini. Torrent of water washed away some of the holy icons at the little church of Agia Barbara, t'other side of the de Bosset bridge. Water supply cut off around Faraklata and Razata. Heard the area around Argostoli has been declared a disaster zone but haven't heard of any serious problems this side of the island.

All the water and rocks that washed through the church of Agia Barbara continued down the ravine picking up more rocks and rubbish on its way. When it met the 200 year old walls of the British Cemetery at Drapano it broke down a 30 metre section and washed through the right hand side of the cemetery leaving tons of rock, mud and rubish all over the ground. It then broke down another section of the wall and washed through the neighbours garden. Cemetery now closed until further notice.

The manager of the cemetery is still planning on holding a remembrance day service in November. Watch for further details.

Thanks for the news about the British Cemetery, Alison, hope no graves were disturbed. Hope it's OK for the annual Remembrance Service.
