The dogs that protect Little Penguins

When foxes discovered Little Penguins on a small Australian island, they nearly wiped the colony out. But a farmer came up with a novel way to protect the birds - and the story has been made into a hit film.

As a premise for a film, think Lassie meets Babe meets Pingu. What's not to like?

Middle Island, a beautiful, rugged and windswept outcrop off the coast of southern Victoria is home to a colony of the world's smallest penguins.

Originally known as Fairy Penguins, before some pen-pusher deemed that politically incorrect, they've now been given the far more dreary sounding title of Little Penguins.

To be fair, they are just that - little, standing at 30 to 40cm tall.

There used to be hundreds of them on Middle Island - but that was before the foxes got to them.

Seems Kef municipality are warning about the danger of low energy light bulbs and the need to recycle them rather than putting in the big green bins. Advice is pretty much the same as what's on this nhs.uk page under Some tips for cleaning up, except advice from Kef municipality is to vacate the room for 30 minutes minimum.

Can't say I've ever noticed any low energy light bulb recycling points anywhere on Kef, anyone come across any?

Haven't checked this lately, so it may no longer be true, but until at least a month ago, you could recycle light bulbs in the social center in Poros.  There was/is? a big cardboard box near the doorway under the stairs for bulbs.

Yep! Had a look in Poros Community Centre with Alexandra today, definitely two boxes, one for fluorescent tubes, one for low energy bulbs

Probably nothing that most of us hadn't figured out, but worth a read.

Presumably the town is called Trumpington but sadly isn't.  The person making the claim is a science teacher in the town's school.  She also said the solar panels caused cancer!  :oki:
