As far as I can make out from the following article in the Kefalonia press...
http://kefaloniapress.gr/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=60065&Itemid=188
it looks like (using google translation) there is a proposal to close the Bank of Greece in Argostoli at the end of year.

I didn't know there was a Bank of Greece in Argostoli!

There used to be two, now only the one on Sitemboron - between the harbour road (A Tritsi) and Lithostroto, and the bank our IKA money is paid into. Spent many a 2-3 hours in there waiting to draw my money out.

Think that's the Εθνική Τράπεζα της Ελλάδος (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Bank_of_Greece) (National Bank of Greece), not the Τράπεζα της Ελλάδος (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bank_of_Greece) (Bank of Greece), a.k.a. ΤτΕ.
NBoG is the largest commercial bank in Greece, ΤτΕ is the central bank of Greece, akin to the Bank of England.

There has always been one in Argostoli and it was in the traditional looking building opposite the Perfecture, which has now been refurb for the Mayor's office. The new premises are on the side street in Zambia House, Momferatou & Rizospaston Str.
So that's where to go to purchase and sell your gold sovereigns. :)
