Complex engineering and metal-work discovered beneath ancient Greek 'pyramid'
Latest find on Cyclades’ Keros includes evidence of metal-working and suggests the beginnings of an urban centre, say archaeologists

More than 4,000 years ago builders carved out the entire surface of a naturally pyramid-shaped promontory on the Greek island of Keros. They shaped it into terraces covered with 1,000 tonnes of specially imported gleaming white stone to give it the appearance of a giant stepped pyramid rising from the Aegean: the most imposing manmade structure in all the Cyclades archipelago.

But beneath the surface of the terraces lay undiscovered feats of engineering and craftsmanship to rival the structure’s impressive exterior. Archaeologists from three different countries involved in an ongoing excavation have found evidence of a complex of drainage tunnels – constructed 1,000 years before the famous indoor plumbing of the Minoan palace of Knossos on Crete – and traces of sophisticated metalworking.

Travel disruption as high winds and snow hit UK

Severe gales have been causing disruption to much of the UK - with gusts of up to 83 mph (134 kph).

Police in several areas, including Lincolnshire, Norfolk and Gloucestershire, have reported fallen trees on or near roads.

Damage to overhead electric wires is causing problems for train services in the Midlands, and drivers are being warned to take extra care on the roads.

In East Anglia and south east England more than 59,000 homes have lost power.

In Scotland, police are urging motorists to drive with "extreme caution" in the wintry conditions.

Rail commuters are facing delays in London, Wales, Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Buckinghamshire, Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire. In Sydenham, south east London, a train has hit a tree.

Greeks pay dear for mobile services

Greece is the most expensive country in terms of cell phone services among the member-states of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

OECD data revealed this week that Greek mobile phone users pay much more for their service than the average European, Turkish or Mexican consumer. Charges in Greece are two or even three times the OECD average.

Fuel prices rise but demand keeps dropping

Greece is among the top 10 countries with the most expensive gasoline in the world, due to its high taxation, with domestic demand in constant decline.

Data collected by the GlobalPetrolPrices.com website show Greece shares sixth spot on the list with Italy, ranking fifth among European countries.

According to the Energy Ministry’s Liquid Fuel Observatory, the average price of gasoline came to 1.547 euros per liter on Monday, up from 1.538 euros/lt on January 1.
