Site opens for tax declarations

The online platform for the submission of this year’s income tax declarations (for incomes earned in 2016) opened on Thursday, earlier than ever before, and it appears that it will close on July 15, although a legal clause to that end is still anticipated.

More than 6 million taxpayers will have to file details concerning their 2016 economic activities and all signs point to a higher tax bill for the vast majority.

Income tax declaration deadline is June 30

All taxpayers will have to submit their income tax declarations by June 30, according to a law amendment tabled in Parliament on Tuesday.

Taxpayers’ first income tax installment is due by July 31, the second by end-September and the third by end-November. The number of installments for businesses has been slashed from eight to six, with the first payable by the end of the month after the declaration’s submission, instead of the same day. The subsequent five tranches are due on the last day of the following five months.

Deadline extension necessary to prevent collapse of Taxisnet

Just 14 days before the cutoff date for the submission of the year’s income tax declarations, all signs suggest that the government will be forced to extend the deadline, not least because the online Taxisnet portal will likely crash if too many people leave it until the last minute.

Additional tax up to 40-50 pct above last year

More than two-fifths of Greek taxpayers have to fork out additional tax this year averaging 1,211 euros, according to the tax statements submitted and processed until Tuesday.

Accounting offices report that the additional tax is up by as much as 40-50 percent for most taxpayers compared to last year, owing to the increase in the solidarity levy and new tax rates.

With barely six days left until the July 17 deadline, there are about 800,000 declarations that have not been submitted, which is likely to force the ministry to extend the submission deadline further.
