‘Pushed to the limit’: the tiny Greek island in people smugglers’ sights

Even by the standards of small Greek islands, Gavdos is tiny. In a population of fewer than 70 people, there are just two families with four children. The rest “are all old people mostly living alone”, its mayor, Lilian Stefanaki, explains.

It is a micro-world that in the depths of winter is served by a single school, a bakery, two mini-markets and four kafeneia cum tavernas. The remote island – separated from the coast of Crete by frequently unpredictable waters in the Libyan Sea – is watched over by Efsevios Daskalakis, who for much of the year is its sole police officer.

But recently life on Gavdos has been a little less quiet than usual.

Boat Race rowers told not to enter Thames due to high levels of E. coli

Rowers taking part in the 2024 Boat Race between Oxford and Cambridge in London are among rowing clubs that have been told not to enter the Thames after high levels of E. coli were found.

Crews have also been warned to cover blisters, and wear footwear when getting in and out of the boat.

Pressure group River Action said tests indicated the bacteria came from sewage directly discharged into the river.

1 €UR = $ 1.7113 AUD   $1 AUD = 0.5843 €UR

Based on National Bank of Greece exchange rates.
Other banks likely to offer rates which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g. the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Animal lover cared for hat bobble all night thinking it was a sick baby hedgehog

A worried animal lover burst into an animal rescue centre with an eerily still baby hedgehog she had desperately scooped up to safety from the side of the road.

Concerned it “hadn’t moved or pooped all night” despite being given cat food, she anxiously waited for the vet to come back into the lobby to deliver some painful news: “It’s not a hedgehog - it is a hat bobble.”

It was a kind thought, anyway.
