Greece to offer 330 million euros to help restaurants and bars open

Greece will offer restaurants and bars that have been under lockdown for months around 330 million euros ($390 million) in additional funding to enable them to re-open in the coming weeks, officials said on Thursday.

More than 70,000 restaurants, bars and cafes have been closed since November, when a hard lockdown was imposed to contain the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic. Industry associations estimate that about one in five may not be able to open ahead of the summer tourist season.

British ex-pats ordered back on plane to UK at Spanish airport over Brexit rules

A group of British nationals living in Spain were denied re-entry to the country and forced to return on a flight back to the UK after a dispute over post-Brexit paperwork at the airport.

Around 40 people on a flight from Manchester were turned back upon arriving at Alicante-Elche airport in Spain on Tuesday, according to reports.

Describing the situation as “absolutely diabolical”, 47-year-old Mancunian Stuart Miller told Olive Press that a sign was put up at the terminal at Alicante saying: “No TIE card, no entry.”

The TIE cards have been given to British citizens who have successfully gained residency status in Spain after Brexit.

However, the Spanish authorities have previously made clear that other forms of paperwork proving residency before the end of the Brexit transition period would allow people to return to the country.

Three Workers Die of Electrocution on Greece’s Evia Island

Three men, members of a crew who were putting power lines underground, were lethally electrocuted on Thursday in an accident on the island of Evia, central Greece.

A fourth man, also a member of the Public Power Corporation (DEI) crew, was injured as well in the tragedy and was rushed to the nearest health center in critical condition.

The horrific accident occurred in the afternoon as many locals were going about their day in the village of Gymnos. The three men were struck by 20,000 volts and died instantly, reports say.

The horrific scene was witnessed by several locals who rushed to offer assistance, but they were faced with only charred bodies.

The DEI has launched a program to install underground power lines throughout Greece.

One shopping trip per day in Greece

Consumers will only be allowed one shopping trip per day, Greece’s Trade and Consumer Protection Secretary General Panagiotis Stamboulidis announced on Thursday.

“We can send only one message a day and one our name and surname. The reply to the second message will be a refusal,” he said.

From Monday April 5, retail opens, and individuals must send an SMS text message to 13033 (option 6) in order to obtain permission.

The presence of one customer per 25 square meters will be allowed in each store, with a maximum of 20 customers.

Shoppers must follow strict social distancing rules while making purchases in person in all retail stores.

Mask wearing is mandatory in all public places.

Movements between municipalities for shopping will also be permitted on weekdays, provided an appointment has been booked in advance by phone or online, and people must carry their identity card or passport on shopping trips, he added.

He also clarified that payment when picking up goods ordered by the ‘click and collect’ method must use cards and not cash.

Greece’s Covid-19 vaccine rollout expands to 65-69 age group

Greece entered the next phase of its vaccination drive against the novel coronavirus on Friday as the eligible cohorts for jabs were expanded to the 65-69 age group.

Meanwhile, teachers who have been placed on the standby list for leftover Covid-19 jabs will as of Friday be alerted by health authorities to make an appointment to get the vaccine.

Overseas holiday destinations 'to be ranked using traffic light system'
Countries to be graded green, amber or red based on Covid rates and vaccination rollouts, reports say

Foreign holiday destinations will be ranked under a traffic light system, with fewer restrictions tied to the places boasting the lowest coronavirus rates and high vaccination take-up, it has been reported.

Countries will be graded either green, amber or red, according to how well they are coping with the pandemic, it was claimed.

Hesitancy towards the vaccine across parts of mainland Europe may mean that favoured continental destinations among British holidaymakers are deemed more high-risk than the likes of the US and Israel, where vaccination rates are good.

Overseas holidays are currently banned due to the UK’s coronavirus lockdown measures, but Boris Johnson plans to make an announcement on Easter Monday about lifting restrictions in England.

Farmed fish suffer pain and stress, says report that criticises welfare failings

Those who care about the welfare of fish and seafood should opt for clams, mussels or seaweed, according to a new report, which says popular fish, including farmed Atlantic salmon and trout, have more complex welfare needs and are more likely to experience pain and suffering.
