Reusable olive oil bottles to be banished from restaurant tables

The Economy Ministry has called a halt to the practice of restaurants and tavernas topping up the olive oil bottles on their tables from a source in the kitchen, saying it poses a hygiene risk to customers.

As of January 1, 2018, food service enterprises will be banned from using reusable bottles on their tables and will be forced to provide branded olive oil only....the restaurant to decide whether it will charge patrons extra for it.

Hm, the Economy Ministry is making decisions on public health. Hmmm.

So, at a certain taverna I regularly frequent I won't, as I have done for many years, be able to enjoy his home pressed oil.  It certainly doesn't have a brand name but is certainly superior to any I have bought on the island.

How much has Tsipras and his cronies been paid to ensure all small, Greek, businesses are bankrupted and only kraut tour companies with their horrendous "All Inclusive" monstrosities will be the only accommodation available.

Half the fun is sampling wine passed by the management, er, "granddad's homemade wine", at least the local olive oil is usually fit for purpose.

Consuming too much of granddad's wine, yes, but never heard of anyone being ill due to consuming local olive oil with their meal.

Salvation may be at hand in the disinclination of Greeks to obey laws they don't like. Smoking in tavernas and bars comes to mid, as does plonking a basket of bread on the taverna table and charging (a wee amount) for it without asking if it's wanted.

Be interesting to see if tavernas out in the sticks (on the islands) comply, or if those that try charging for branded oil find themselves less busy that those that plonk a bottle of granddad's olive oil on the table f.o.c.

Edit: typo

Instead of banning all reusable bottles which prevents home made oil being used why not test the bottles if they look iffy and prosecute those tavernas which have bottles with some actual contamination which could be dangerous.  Bit too simple?

Tony

PS Those oil/vinegar, salt & pepper sets are used all over southern Europe with no complaints.

Bit too complicated! Well, too time consuming, anyway - doubt the Economy Ministry could afford to pay the necessary staff.

Talking of vinegar, and testing bottles for contamination, ever sat at a taverna table and discovered a vinegar bottle with alien slime in it?

Seen it on a few taverna tables and, although it's harmless mother of vinegar (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mother_of_vinegar), it looks pretty evil.

Olive oil will have to be presented at the table in sealed bottles to customers at restaurants and tavernas across Greece as of January 1.

Many restaurants already provide 100 ml bottles of olive oil to diners, at a cost of around 1 euro per bottle.

Fines of 500 euros will be imposed on those who will violate the regulation, according to amna.gr (http://www.amna.gr/en/article/215503/Refillable-olive-oil-containers-to-be-abolished-as-of-Jan-1)
