Huge swathes Britain will wake up to a blanket of snow on Thursday - with several severe weather warnings issued for areas on the East coast

Met Office spokesperson Lindsay Mears said:... "The further north you go, the more cold it's going to get.

"Snow could be hitting London, Uxbridge, the Midlands, Berkshire, Yorkshire and the Humber and parts of Sctoland."

Er... how does Uxbridge get a special mention.  It's not even the biggest town in the England - by a long chalk - let alone the biggest county which is Yorkshire.  It's in London - it's not even a borough of London, it's part of one (Hillingdon).  It's not even famous for anything.  Charles I tried to talk himself out of defeat by the parliamentarians (failed) and the RAF Battle of Britain bunker is there - that's it!  OK it gets a mention from time to time in a Radio 4 funny prog.  None of which entitles it to a special mention in the weather forecast!

I thought that was a little bit strange.

Mind you, you did miss out its most famous resident, who was...... Christine Keeler  :hmm:

PS: Did you figure out where Sctoland is?

Heavy snow affects travel in the north of England

Yorkshire, Lancashire and Derbyshire have been worst affected, after 2-5cm fell overnight, with 10cm reported on higher ground.

Passengers waiting to depart Manchester Airport have reported being stuck on the runway for hours due to a lack of de-icers.

BBC Weather said Buxton in Derbyshire saw up to 17cm of snow, the deepest measured on Friday.

Icy showers and snow forecast for UK as temperatures plunge below freezing
Weather: The Met Office said sleet and heavy downpours are set to spread southwards over the weekend

Icy showers and snow are forecast across the weekend, as Storm Jake moves slowly down the country from Scotland to the South East.

After heavy snow coated parts of the north of England yesterday, sleet and heavy downpours are set to spread southwards over the weekend.

Rain and sleet is due to fall across London and the South East, threatening to cause hazardous driving conditions on untreated road surfaces.

Just come back from six days in the caravan. Thrown everything at us. Sole purpose for our son to attach awning!!!Thought at times we might finish up on Dogger Bank. Well we survived. Tough these Oldies!!!Might give it a miss though for a week or two no good tempting fate? Would rather die warm and dry.

UK weather: Killer heatwave feared as 93F temperatures loom this week

Britain’s elderly are being urged to take extra care this week as a heatwave is set to bring the highest temperatures of the year.

Hot air coming from the Sahara desert will cause temperatures to rocket to 93.2F (34C) and put vulnerable people at risk, experts said.

Me too! Everyone complains about the heat, but actually during August it has been very steady around 32c by day and 25c at night.

Is it usually hotter in July Roger? Always seems more comfortable in August as it seems cooler at night than July.

The weather chart seems to show very similar temperatures in both months if taken over a number of years.

Big chill on the way as Arctic winds head towards the UK

With temperatures in the 20s, Halloween was weirdly warm for some of us.

But November has ushered in a chillier feel and according to the Met Office’s recent three-month forecast, there could be much colder weather on the way.

In fact, the Met are predicting a 30 per cent chance of a colder than normal early winter.

“It all points to a higher risk of cold snaps between now and Christmas in contrast to the mild winters we’ve had recently,” said the Met Office’s Adam Scaife.

“But this is highly unlikely to be as extreme as December 2010, the coldest December for over 100 years.”

One upside to the colder temperatures is there may be less rainfall than usual, lowering the risk of the flooding that caused so much havoc last December.
