6 reasons Greece is the new destination for foodies
With influences from Turkey, the Middle East and the Balkans, Greece’s culinary credibility is on the rise.

So if you’re lucky enough to be travelling to Greece this year, here are six of its foodie hotspots chosen by CV Villas, offering something a little different to kebabs and stuffed vine leaves.

1. Visit Kefalonia for feta

Although you can find feta production across much of Greece, its traditional home is the island of Kefalonia. The making of feta on this Ionian island dates back to Homer’s times, so if you’re a fan of the tangy sheep’s cheese then this is the place to head.

Travel tip: Kefalonia is famed for other cheese as well as feta - try kefalotyri, a hard sheep’s cheese that’s best served fried in oil, similarly to halloumi.

:hmm: Really not sure Kef is the traditional home of feta... although there is some delicious feta made on Kef

Mike, you're right about feta not being traditionally associated with Kefalonia.  We're not even supposed to call locally produced feta "feta", because we're outside the zone that has exclusive rights to that name.

It's been quite a few years since I saw any "barrel cheese" in Katelios or Skala.  Is it still available anywhere??

Feta from the barrel always available in the Galaxy in Skala, very good. Last year AB in Skala had it, also very good, my favourite place the cheese factory up at Pastra.

Seem to recall at least two of the three 'supermarkets' in Poros sold it, also the cheese maker in Agia Eirini.

I meant to mention the place in Agia Eirini very good and very helpful. We got some from there the day before we returned to the UK last October. Once we had tasted it he vac packed it for us we brought it back and kept in in the fridge until we needed it on the 10th of Dec it was delicious.

If you want to take some home with you, you can buy it already vacuum packed in AB Supermarket. Look in the refrigerated cabinets-not the deli counter & make sure you are buying Kefalonia Barrel Cheese.
Take a big piece back with you Just keep it in the fridge until you need to use it, always bring to room temp before using of course. Put the remaining piece in a Tupperware style container & cover in brine then reseal. To make the brine ....half an ounce of salt dissolved in half a pint of water, pour into the container & make sure the top of the Feta is covered, seal & put back in the fridge. It will keep like this for months.....if you can leave it alone for that long of course!!!!!
