Hundreds of Athens buses are gathering dust in depots rather than serving the city’s residents as OSY, the transport authority that manages them, is short on cash for fuel, Kathimerini understands.

Inadequate funds compound other problems that have led to half of OSY’s 2,150-strong fleet sitting idle, including the shortage of spare parts. Around half of the buses that are sitting in depots are said to lack tires.

Meanwhile an ongoing strike by cleaning staff demanding unpaid wages has left those buses that are still active on city routes dirty, with some officials claiming that they pose a public health risk.

Some bus drivers clean the buses before their shift to make the journey less unpleasant.

God almighty it sounds like a scene from a Mad Max movie ! Feel sorry for the long suffering traveling public but a high five to the drivers who take a bit of pride in their work and make the effort to help.
