Facial recognition app helps you internet stalk that girl you saw on the bus

If this is true, it’s creepy.

Facial recognition app scans strangers faces for dating profiles, criminal background

The makers of new app called NameTag are promising that in the future “your photo shares you” by allowing users to scan strangers using facial recognition technology and then match them to a publicly-available online profiles.

FacialNetwork have not made it clear how they will compile their database, but the suggestion is that any information that has been made public – users’ profiles on Twitter or Facebook for example – will be considered fair game.

Individuals can opt-out of the system, but only by signing up to the company’s NameTag service.

NameTag’s creator Kevin Alan Tussy [said], "It’s not about invading anyone’s privacy; it’s about connecting people that want to be connected."

The technology also currently allows American users to compare photos with the more than 450,000 entries in the National Sex Offender Registry and other criminal databases.

Might seem like a good way for, e.g. a young woman - or her parents -  to check on her latest date but let's (ahem) face it: anyone with evil intent will use a false name, alter their appearance and probably set up fake accounts on social media sites. Meanwhile, the rest of us will be 'connected' whether we want to be or not. Probably a great way to find a (vulnerable) victim.

Presumably NSA and GCHQ have already auto-scanned all the pics on FB.  Reason #5748......
