Study Finds Greece’s Social Handouts at EU Average, but Unequally Redistributed

The European Statistics Agency Eurostat published an interesting study recently about the levels of social protection across the European Union.

The study presents valuable information not only about the total expenditure each member state spends to protect the most vulnerable in society, but also the different sectors and population groups to whom this money is allotted.

The data published, which concern the year 2017, highlight two crucial factors: The first is the massive difference from one member state to the other regarding social protection. And the second is that, despite the financial crisis of the last decade, the EU on average is still the region with one of the best social protection systems in the world.

The highest percentage among all the EU nations is found in France, where the state spent 34.1 percent of its revenues to protect its most vulnerable, while the smallest expenditures  were seen in Romania, at only 14.4 percent.

In the same year, Greece spent 25.2 percent of its GDP on social protection, slightly lower than the EU average. The country was ranked just behind the UK and above Portugal in terms of total social protection expenditure as a percentage of its GDP.

However, Greece’s social protection expenditures are massively unequal when it comes down to the crucial factor of who the actual beneficiary of these funds is.
