Waiting for the sun: Floods and winds put Greek summer on hold

Greeks who would usually be basking in the early summer sun have kept behind closed doors this week as winds and heavy rains washed away sunbeds and sent floods crashing into some resorts.

Freak weather conditions drenched towns and cities and turned some roads into rivers - a worry in a country so dependent on its summer tourist trade.

Looks like it's going to be hot and sunny on Kef  :)

Some say the worst June in living memory. Certainly the worst I have recorded by a long way, with rainfall over 200 mms.

Just returned from 4 weeks in Skala. Yes we had some unbelieveable thunderstorms and for a few days more like early October, we felt sorry
for the bars and restaurants as the tourists stayed in their hotels and apartments, but this last week the sunny blue skies returned and the temperatures soared back to the Kefalonia we know and love.

Greece had a wetter, windier summer with few heatwaves in 2018, National Observatory of Athens reports

The summer of 2018 was notable for record rainfall and intense lightning activity, as well as stronger-than-usual winds, but without the scorching heatwaves of previous years, the National Observatory of Athens' meteo service reported on Monday.

The highest temperature recorded throughout the summer in Greece was on July 23 in Kranidi, where it reached a high of 42.1 degrees, while it did not exceed 40 degrees in Attica during the three summer months. The heaviest rain in a single day was in Naoussa on August 27, when it reached a daily total of 149 mm.

Lightning activity in July 2018 was the highest recorded in the last 14 years, with 103,000 bolts of lightning recorded throughout the country.

I read somewhere that Greece will have a late flourish - not sure how accurate that prediction is.
