Levante Ferries are (allegedly) applying to provide a Ithaka-Sami-Patras service, possible starting as soon as 24/07/15.

From what I hear there will be two crossings daily Ithaka-Sami-Patras from 24/07/15-24/08/15, then one crossing daily 25/08/15-15/09/15, after which the connection will operate three times a week until 31/10/15. After that...

Seems the Skala water bus is out of action due to 'family reasons'. Not sure if the new KTEL local bus service has anything to do with that, or not.

EasyJet overbooking thousands of peak-season flights - and flouting EU rules on offloaded passengers

The tennis player, Annabel Croft, tweeted from the Algarve: “Have arrived Portugal minus our daughter. Not a great start to our family holiday - no idea buying a ticket didn’t guarantee a seat. I asked easyJet if I could stay with her and they said yes, but we will charge you £60. Unbelievable.”

Property prices may drop up to 18 pct by 2017

The Greek property market is expected to enter a new cycle of decline as a result of increased recessionary pressure on the Greek economy, a report by GLP Values, a chartered surveyor firm, argues, adding that in the next two to three years prices are likely to drop by as much as 18 percent from their current levels.

If this forecast proves correct, “the total decline in the housing market will reach 60 percent,” Tasos Tsombanidis from GLP Values told Kathimerini.

Oregano found to contain impostor herbs
Tests of oregano on sale in both large stores and specialist sellers found that one in four samples of oregano contained 'other ingredients'

It has become a kitchen cupboard staple among fans of Mediterranean cooking, but as much as 70 per cent of the dried oregano in packets and jars sold in Britain is "fake", a study suggests.

I'm sure the nice old Greek man who sold it you, and his lovely wife who tenderly picked it, would never dream of sticking substitutes in and flogging it off to tourists.

The Hong Kong-arm of the security firm has also blundered after one member of staff left a loaded Remington shotgun at an ATM, while another van was involved in a bizarre road accident, leaving the stricken vehicle sitting on top of a BMW.

So why not pick your own. Saw this press release in the Kefalonia News (google translation)

The Management Body of the National Park Enos announces the organization of the annual trips for the aromatic and edible plants of oregano Sunday, July 26, 2015, at 7:30 a.m.

The aim of the tour is to inform and raise awareness of the citizens and visitors of the National Park on the herb oregano, careful collection of which, contribute to achieving sustainable conservation of the area.

Meeting point for the tour of oregano is the yard of the closed field "Antonis tritsis". The Management Body of the National Park of Ainos will provide movement of a number of people than those that interest is unlimited with own transportation.

The program of the tour includes a brief participants on the properties of the plant, the proper method of collection and the drying up of procedures. For the collection of oregano will move in "Fajon" at the boundary of the core of the National Park Ainos. By the end of the collection Agency staff will offer riganada in the courtyard of the Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi Arginia.

The collection of oregano, held in July, is an old habit of local residents of Kefalonia. However, sometimes unorthodox recorded incidents and incompatible with the protection of the plant collection mode and incidents of illegal collection from inside the core of the National Park Ainos.

The Management Body of the National Park Enos inform that the collection of the plant, like any other within the core of the National Park is strictly prohibited. Staff supervised / Guard Agency records and condemns any such incidents to the local authorities and violators face the sanctions of the law. For the rest of Kefalonia, the collection of oregano is indeed permissible, but should always be done with orthodox way (NOT snatched PLANTS!).

For more details and entry form are requested until Friday, July 24, 2015, contact the National Park Management Body Enos, during the hours of 8: 30-16: 30 (Head o j Excursion: Mr. and Sophia Moschopoulou Mr. George Ismail, Tel .: 26710-29258 and E- mail : foreasainou @ ath . Forthnet . GR ).

Regarding the collection procedures and subsequent processing and conservation of oregano, we should know the following:

Collection

Oregano is collected, depending on the region during the months of July-August, ie during the plant's flowering. The plant parts are collected shoots, which bear the leaves and flowers. These are cut into approximately 10 cm. Above the ground. This avoids the eradication of the plant, while the eyes of the base will emerge next year the young shoots. For this reason we get and we always use scissors. Furthermore we take care not to remove all the flowering shoots of each plant, but in each plant to keep at least 2-3 shoots. The seeds resulting from them will ensure plant propagation. If when collecting plants eradicated, then there are regenerated and oregano may be threatened with extinction from the area. For the same reasons, and leave a few plants intact (do not collect any of the shoots) in each region.

Collect small amounts, sufficient only for personal use. The collection of large amounts, e.g. for trading, requires, moreover, permission from the relevant Forest Service or other competent services.

Shoots of oregano should be collected wet or high humidity conditions. After cleavage will be placed in cloth bags, baskets or cardboard boxes, to enable their breathing and to avoid their mechanical injury from possible pressure.

There should be collected shoots, which carry dirt or foreign bodies and stems with leaves unwanted color or smell. Mature leaves (yellow or brown color) should be discarded, as are discolored due to injury or attack by diseases or insects.

Drying

The drying of oregano should be done with caution. The use of inappropriate methods for removing moisture of stems result in deterioration of flavor and the color, which in a short time turns brown or even black. To maintain the green color and the rich flavor of the plant, the stems collected should be dried, either by spreading them thinly on newspaper sheet or scrim in a well ventilated room and inverting them intermittently or their grouping into small bunches which tie and hang in a cool, well-ventilated interior. With the above methods achieve steady and uniform air circulation. Not recommended for direct exposure to sunlight since this causes the bleaching or yellowing of leaves.

After complete drying of stems, crush them into small pieces or grate up to part the leaves and flowers of the small stems, gather in the glass jars and place closed in a shady place, where it can be kept unchanged for a long time to some years.

Dangers

The collection of stems of oregano is beneficial to some extent on the plant. The shearing and collecting only a portion of the stems increases the life of the plant and contributes to the development of lateral shoots.

Despite the abundance of native plants as in all regions of Greece and the fact that most of the needs are covered by the increase in cultivation in recent years the need for oregano and oregano oil are increasing, so there is over-collection plant . Already there is evidence for areas where now has disappeared, whereas previously there was in abundance. In many cases, the problems of over-collection in an area arising after the opening of new roads, which enable access to previously inaccessible areas.

The practices that lead to the extinction of the population of an aromatic / medicinal plant from an area is the eradication of plants and over-collection, that collection quantities larger than those that can support a range.

In some regions, such as Corfu, populations of oregano have declined, according to testimonies of residents, because spraying carried out in groves.

The cultivation of oregano can face the future growing demand. Cases regulated crops found today in several locations.
