Windows 7 EOL / Office 2019
« on: Saturday, 03 February, 2018 @ 13:36:41 »
Extended support for MS Windows 7 with SP1 ends 14/01/2020, a little under two years from now.
Extended support for MS Office 2010 ends 13/10/2020, a little over two years from now.
The programs will still work as normal after these dates but will not receive any further updates/patches.
When will Microsoft end support for your version of Windows or Office?

Microsoft Office 2019 Will Work on Windows 10 Exclusively

Microsoft announced yesterday that future versions of the standalone Office 2019 app will work on Windows 10 versions exclusively.

The Redmond-based company recommends that users with older versions of the Windows operating system use the company’s Office 365 service instead, or update to Windows 10.

The announcement, detailed in a servicing and support update here, is a clear and obvious move to drive more customers to Microsoft's paid Office 365 service. The move might irk some customers who will likely choose to move to alternative apps, such as the open-source LibreOffice suite.

Ninety nine days until Windows 7 'End of Life'... well, it should keep working but (probably) won't get any more updates after 14/01/2020.

Since the demise of XP in 2014 I've been using Linux Mint, very easy to get to grips with and very reliable.

Microsoft ends Windows 7 support: What should you do?

Cyber-security experts are urging Windows 7 users to upgrade their operating system.

Microsoft is going to stop supporting Windows 7 from Tuesday so that it can focus on "newer technologies".

As a result, Windows 7 users will no longer receive the all-important security updates and patches that keep their machines safe.

Computers running Windows 7 will still function after Tuesday but they will become less and less secure.

Microsoft is urging people to move to Windows 10, a newer operating system that it sells for £120.

"Going forward, the best way for you to stay secure is on Windows 10," it said. "And the best way to experience Windows 10 is on a new PC."

It is possible to install Windows 10 on old PCs but Microsoft warns that it may not run smoothly.

In order to run Windows 10, PCs must have a 1GHz processor, 16GB of hard drive space, and 1GB of RAM memory.

"While it is possible to install Windows 10 on your older device, it is not recommended," Microsoft said.

UK authorities have warned Windows 7 users not to do internet banking or send emails after Tuesday.

The warning was issued by the National Cyber Security Centre, which is part of Britain's intelligence agency GCHQ.

No need for panic. Not just yet.
With 28% computers still estimated to be running Win7, there's still a long way to go.
Microsoft recently announced there will still be Security Essentials updates. (they're coding them for the large organisations paying for continued Win7 support - so may as well let the general public have them too)
Several independent Anti Virus products for Win7 will also continue to be updated and supported.
Finally, there's the precedent of the  XP patches released to address the Wannacry attack in 2017 - years after MS ended XP support, and threatened ongoing doom and gloom.
