Greece’s Seasonal Tourism Staff to Receive Support in View of Covid-19

Tourism Ministry in cooperation with the Labor and Social Security Ministry have introduced a support measure for the country’s seasonal workers: the extension of unemployment benefits for two months (April and May) for those whose unemployment card expired during the first three months of the year and were to be employed this tourism season. According to the labor ministry, the unemployment benefit maybe be extended beyond May if deemed necessary.

Individuals employed in the tourism sector who would have otherwise not suffered a loss of income, will receive an 800-euro benefit.

According to a recent government decision, there can be no lay-offs after March 18.

Households buy food provisions to last them weeks

One in two households in Greece have stocked up on basic food commodities, such as pasta and rice, to last over two to three weeks, while one in five have bought enough disinfectants for more than a month, according to a survey by the Research Institute of Retail Consumer Goods (IELKA).

Interestingly, following the first stock-up on pasta and disinfectants, there was a major increase in the sales of food supplements (vitamins, cod liver oil products etc).

A surprisingly high 25 percent of households have also bought enough meat for two to three weeks, and 9 percent have bought enough for a month.

Asda said it wanted to recruit more than 5,000 temporary staff from among people whose jobs have been impacted by the virus.

Aldi announced it was looking to fill 5,000 new temporary posts and take on 4,000 permanent new workers for jobs in all its stores and distribution centres.

And Lidl said it would create about 2,500 temporary jobs across its 800 stores in the UK.

Fears of catastrophe as Greece puts migrant camps into lockdown
Doctors say coronavirus outbreak could be disastrous amid ‘horrific’ conditions

As of Wednesday, the camps have been locked down from 7pm to 7am. In the daytime, only one person is allowed out per family, and the police control their movements. Some camps, on the islands of Leros and Kos, have been closed entirely.

In the five Greek island “hotspots” that are sheltering about 42,000 people, one case of Covid-19 has been recorded. The affected person is a resident of the island of Lesbos. There have been no cases in the camps so far.

Coronavirus: Young people 'not invincible', warns World Health Organisation
'This virus could put you in hospital for weeks, or even kill you,' says director-general amid concern young people dismissive of risk

Young people are not immune to coronavirus and are at risk of serious illness or death as well as putting their elders in danger if they do not avoid socialising, the World Health Organisation has warned.

A “significant proportion” of patients treated in hospital for Covid-19 around the world were aged under 50, the WHO said, amid concern the gravity of the pandemic had not been grasped by many.

“Today, I have a message for young people: You are not invincible”, said the organisation’s director general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Speaking at a media briefing on Friday, he stressed: “This virus could put you in hospital for weeks, or even kill you.  Even if you don’t get sick, the choices you make about where you go could be the difference between life and death for someone else”.

Many other cartons of medical supplies, weighing about 10 tons, donated by Chinese enterprises and organisations arrived on the same flight, a Chinese Embassy announcement said.

Gov't lowers VAT on antiseptics, personal protection products; limits purchases to three

The VAT on face masks, surgical gloves, ethyl alcohol and antiseptic soaps, gels, tissues and other personal protection products to prevent infection with coronavirus has been lowered to 6 pct from 24 pct, based on an Act of Legislative Content published in the Government Gazette on Saturday.

Meanwhile, another ALC on emergency coronavirus measures tabled in parliament will restrict the number of antiseptic and disinfectant products, including ethyl alcohol, that each customer can purchase at a time to just three, either from supermarkets or pharmacies, and stipulates that they must be sold in individual packages. The measure aims to eliminate "artificial" shortages of such products due to bulk purchasing by consumers.

Deaths from coronavirus rise to 13 in Greece

Another three victims of the coronavirus epidemic were announced on Saturday in Greece, raising the total number of Covid-19-related deaths in the country so far to 13. The latest victims to die of complications caused by the virus were two men and one woman.

Based on figures released by the National Organisation for Public Health, of the 495 recorded cases of Covid-19 in Greece, 53.5 pct are men and 46.5 pct are women. Just over half are from the 40-64 years age group, while 24.2 pct are aged 18-39 and 20.7 pct are aged over 60. Only 4.4 pct of cases are aged between 0 and 17 years old.

The first epidemiological study published on the organisation's official website shows that 23.6 pct of cases, or 117 in total, are still being treated in hospital and 26 have needed respiratory support and intubation.

The figures for the period up to March 20 show that the greatest number of cases, 213, is based in the Athens region and another 32 cases are in the broader Attica region.

Next highest on the list are Ilia (41 cases) and Kastoria (13), followed by Thessaloniki (10) and Achaia (nine), with smaller number of cases in other areas.

Like cold and flu bugs, the virus is spread via droplets when a person coughs or sneezes. The droplets land on surfaces and are picked up on the hands of others and spread further. People catch the virus when they touch their infected hands to their mouth, nose or eyes.

It follows that the single most important thing you can do to protect yourself is keep your hands clean by washing them frequently with soap and water or a hand sanitising gel.

There is some debate about whether the disease is airborne – there is no evidence for it yet, but that could change.

The current advice is that the disease can only be spread between close contacts – defined as spending more than 15 minutes within two metres of an infected person.
