Threat to raki and tsipouro tax status

Tsipouro and raki producers risk losing their favorable tax status if Greece loses its battle at the European Court of Justice, following a referral on Wednesday by the European Commission.

A negative ruling based on the government’s failure to contain illegal bulk sales of the two traditional Greek spirits, will have a significant impact not just on small-scale producers who are licensed to produce just enough to cover household consumption, but also on the major Greek distillers.

Greece has no special exemption for tsipouro or raki, but still imposes a 50 percent discount on the special consumption tax, amounting to about 5.10 euros per liter.

I have a sneaking suspicion this is a tax that might be a little difficult to collect with so many people making it on the side to sell as well as for family and friends but not enough to make a living out of it.

Currently the small, local, producers pay (?) 6% tax, which is how they manage to sell it comparatively inexpensively. Be a great pity if the EU destroy another harmless historical aspect of Greek culture, or force it underground.

Didn't know that Maik.  Wouldn't have thought that local production would make that much difference.  6% seems fair! (how many pay that?!)
