I hope everyone on Going Greek is safe and well, and that any damage is only minor.

Thanks, Jim. Damage is worse than first reported, older buildings look to be worst affected and some structures that perhaps weren't as strong as needed. Happily, still only a few minor injuries reported.

Very good try, Maarm. No reported 'quakes for four hours, beginning to think I'd be filling the pages of GGi with stories of corrupt politicians and civil servants. But here we go again:

Prime Minister of Greece, Antonis Samaras, arrived at Kefalonia airport between 23:00 - 23:30, staying overnight in Argostoli and visiting Lixouri tomorrow.

Quote
PM Samaras travels to earthquake-stricken Kefalonia after meeting with Russia's Putin

Prime Minister Antonis Samaras on Tuesday redirected his plane to the earthquake-stricken island of Kefalonia, where he will spend the night, instead of returning to Athens as planned.

Leaving Brussels on Tuesday evening, where he earlier held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Samaras ordered the pilot of the state aircraft to change course and land in Kefalonia instead of Athens.
http://www.amna.gr/english/articleview.php?id=4901

Are there elections coming? Despite what the amna headline says, damage was confined pretty much to parts of Lixouri area and Argostoli. Kefalonia as a whole has not been 'striken' and is very much looking forward to a bustling tourist season.

In the aftermath of the large-scale earthquake (5.9-Richter) that rocked Kefalonia Island on Sunday 26 January, the Hellenic Federation of Hoteliers sent a message of sympathy to those who are going through difficult times.

According to latest developments, most of the island’s tourism infrastructure is in very good condition and no problems have been reported that affect the accommodation capacity of the destination.

“In view of the new season, everything shows that Kefalonia is ready to welcome and service foreign and Greek visitors,” the federation concluded.

And news from our leader:

Quote
Prime Minister Antonis Samaras on Wednesday expressed the government's strong will in assisting the Ionian island of Cephalonia to return to normality following a 5.9 Richter earthquake on Sunday. Samaras arrived on the island on an unscheduled visit late Tuesday.

Speaking to the press on Wednesday, the premier noted that all of the island's schools had been checked for damage with the majority expected to start operating again on Monday.

Some 400 buildings, including houses, stores and state buildings have been checked so far, noted the prime minister, who added that the overall damage recorded on the island was comparatively small given the magnitude of Sunday's quake. Hospitals and airports were functioning normally, while infrastructure problems included damage on the Lixouri-Argostoli road which remained closed on Wednesday.

The island's cultural heritage had not suffered major damage, noted Samaras, who added that a Ministry of Culture team was expected to visit the island next week.

"Cephalonia remains a beautiful and entirely safe tourist destination," Samaras concluded.

Thanks, acebinbabe. Mind the gap! Think that road is still closed and, for anyone who *needs* to travel between Argostoli - Lixouri (gawping at peoples' misfortune might not be appreciated), Ionion P. Lines / Taxiarchis are running a free service at least until tomorrow.

Er....  quite a few posts back did I say the "big one" on Sunday was 1.4 Richter more than last September.  I think it was 2.4 more so 251 times stronger.

Oops, sorry

I'll settle for it being described as a LOT stronger. Not just that, the length of time it went on for was equally, if not more, disconcerting than the wobbling: usually they're over with pretty quick, maybe a few seconds. This one was 30 seconds or so, and it seemed longer than that.

Another for the list:

Just had a quick gander at Wikipedia re earthquake measurement...

Quote
An earthquake that measures 5.0 on the Richter scale has a shaking amplitude 10 times larger than one that measures 4.0, and corresponds to a 31.6 times larger release of energy.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richter_magnitude_scale

That's on the Richter magnitude scale, but that's not so widely used now and - just to make comparisons really easy (not) - not all countries use the same seismic measurement scale.

Quote
A seismic scale is used to calculate and compare the severity of earthquakes.

Two fundamentally different but equally important types of scales are commonly used by seismologists to describe earthquakes. The original force or energy of an earthquake is measured on a magnitude scale, while the intensity of shaking occurring at any given point on the Earth's surface is measured on an intensity scale.

The severity of an earthquake is described by both magnitude and intensity. These two frequently confused terms refer to different, but related, observations. Magnitude, usually expressed as an Arabic numeral characterizes the size of an earthquake by measuring indirectly the energy released. By contrast, intensity indicates the local effects and potential for damage produced by an earthquake on the Earth's surface.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seismic_scale

China uses the Liedu scale
Europe the European Macroseismic Scale
India and Russia the Medvedev–Sponheuer–Karnik scale
Japan the Shindo scale
USA the Modified Mercalli scale

What the differences are... well, for one thing, the European Macroseismic Scale uses Roman numerals where:
I = Not felt by anyone
XII = Completely devastating. All structures are destroyed. The ground changes.

Going by that scale, I'd say the big quake on Sunday rated somewhere between VI-VIII.

Not used by seismologists but much easier for me to understand:
How many people were killed / seriously injured?
What's the bill?

Calculating the cost can be pretty difficult. If the media has a slow news day and each 'paper (or Facebook user) tries to make their account more sensational than the other guys' we could be facing a wiped out tourist season.

And as there's dodgy advice going round on the net / via email, this is the almost universally recommended procedure to follow in a 'quake: Drop, Cover, Hold On
