Title: Peregrine Falcon webcam on Norwich Cathedral
Post by: TonyD on Friday, 20 March, 2015 @ 13:19:17
A pair of Peregrine Falcons are looking after an egg laid just yesterday.
There's a webcam watching their nest on Norwich Cathedral.
I found it fascinating, you can  click here to watch. (http://upp.hawkandowl.org/norwich-peregrines/norwich-cathedral-peregrine-live-web-cam-2015/)

Edit: Updated links - Norwich cathedral peregrines (http://upp.hawkandowl.org/norwich-peregrines/norwich-cathedral-peregrine-live-web-cam-2016/) / Bath cathedral peregrines (http://upp.hawkandowl.org/bath-peregrines/bath-st-johns-church-peregrine-live-web-cam-2016/)

Great find! Churches have always been a place of wireless communication and this shouldn't cause any  interruption to the services (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/11482677/Peregrine-falcons-nesting-on-Vodafone-mobile-phone-masts-cause-poor-signal.html), they should be a able to... nest in peace

Good idea but zilch going on at the moment!

You would have thought the site would have used a more appropriate font!

I was getting a bit concerned as the egg isn't getting much incubation:

But...

Quote
The female normally lays a clutch of three or four eggs in late March or April at 2-3 day intervals. Both birds share the incubation, which begins with the last or penultimate egg, and takes 29-32 days per egg.
http://www.rspb.org.uk/discoverandenjoynature/discoverandlearn/birdguide/name/p/peregrine/nesting.aspx

So, there should be more action in the coming days!

As for the font... well, better than Cuckoo (http://www.ffonts.net/Cuckoo-Regular.font)

I am surprised that they have chosen that position for a nest! No protection from the elements.

Yes, a bit lacking creature comforts. Great views, though!

Mum(?) sat on the egg - still only one, mum flew off just after the pic:

Bit hard to tell but I think there's now two eggs:

and two parents:

Can't tell for sure, Bry, but that could be a bit of Partridge between his claw

They do seem to like it high and, I'm sure TonyK will be pleased to hear, they like to be inspired. But just high will do. I didn't realise there are so many of the little breeders around (about 1500 pairs in the UK), here's some others:

Derby Cathedral (http://www.derby.gov.uk/apps/peregrines/webcam.asp)
St. Michael & All Angels, Exeter (http://www.stmichaelsmountdinham.org.uk/peregrine-falcons/)
Chichester Cathedral (http://www.chichestercathedral.org.uk/whats-on/cathedral-peregrines.shtml)
St. Andrews Spire, Worcester (http://peregrine.worcester.gov.uk/)
University of Sheffield (http://peregrine.group.shef.ac.uk/peregrines/)
Nottingham Trent University (http://www.ntu.ac.uk/ecoweb/biodiversity/falcons/)
County Hall, Aylesbury (http://www.bbowt.org.uk/node/17006)
Sussex Heights, Brighton (http://sussexheights.co.uk/sussex-heights-brighton-peregrine-falcons-nestbox-camera?camera=1)

Picture availability and quality varies, some nest sites may not be in use (yet).

Yes, definitely compulsive viewing.
Last Spring we were watching three of the Peregrine Nesting Sites plus The Essex Wildlife Trust Barn Owl Cam in an Owl Nesting Box.
The most exciting viewing was of the Osprey Nest at the Dyfi Osprey Project in Wales.....absolutely stunning pics. The Ospreys haven't arrived back as yet although they should be back in the next couple of weeks.
Unfortunately the Visitor Centre was broken into & completely vandalised last week, all the computers etc completely trashed! Can't understand this wanton vandalism, especially in the middle of nowhere & on a fantastic project like this! They are busy raising money now so that this year's nesting can be seen by all.

Suitable candidates for the first one-way trip to Mars.

Looks like the Dyfi Osprey Project (http://www.dyfiospreyproject.com/stream) live feed is back on line (at the moment, anyway) and I came across another osprey nest live webcam at the Loch of Lowes (http://scottishwildlifetrust.org.uk/things-to-do/wildlife-webcams/loch-of-lowes/) (good picture quality but looks to be unoccupied as yet, there was a coal tit hopping about all over it a moment ago). Nearby there's a  Red Squirrel webcam (http://scottishwildlifetrust.org.uk/things-to-do/wildlife-webcams/loch-of-lowes2/). Also up in Scotland, a live webcam to a pair of breeding peregrines at the Falls of Clyde (http://scottishwildlifetrust.org.uk/things-to-do/wildlife-webcams/falls-of-clyde/) (natural habitat but poor picture quality).

One that I forgot to mention, the peregrine nest at Bath St. John's Church (http://upp.hawkandowl.org/bath-peregrines/bath-st-johns-church-peregrine-live-web-cam-2015/), one egg now in the nest.

Just a thought. The camera down in Argostoli hasn't been working for a while so how about making it known that a pair of Peregrine's are nesting there and hopefully someone will install a camera. Simples.

Perching on the side of an old power station chimney with St Paul’s Cathedral to the north and the Shard, Europe’s tallest building, to the east is not where you might expect to glimpse the world’s fastest bird. Yet Tate Modern, and London landmarks including Battersea Power Station and the Houses of Parliament, have been home for several years to peregrine falcons. A surprising flash of the wild in the heart of the city, the powerful bird of prey is also a specialised hunter of feral pigeons, considered such an urban pest that in 2003 a ban was imposed on feeding them in Trafalgar Square (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/3275233.stm).

With cities’ abundant food sources and tall buildings providing a predator-free equivalent of the species’ traditional cliff-side home, the raptor’s success has extended far beyond the capital. Having colonised urban areas from Aberdeen to Cardiff, ecologists now believe it is only a matter of time before peregrine falcons are breeding in every major UK town and city.
“All those born and bred in cities, that’s their habitat that they’ve grown up in. When they’re drifting around the country, they find little towns and cities elsewhere … and that’s what they’re used to,” says David Goode, a veteran ecologist and author of a new book, Nature in Town and Cities (http://bookshop.theguardian.com/nature-in-towns-and-cities.html). “That’s why I say it won’t be long until they’re in every place.”

Read somewhere that there's maybe fifty breeding pairs in the Netherlands, as it's pretty flat I'm thinking they're nesting in spires and high towers.

Followed the link and read the rest of the article, very interesting, thanks.

Wow! Mum(?) was sat on the eggs, kept changing position every ten minutes or so, then got off the eggs and hopped onto the ledge making one heck of a racket in the process, dad(?) suddenly appeared and mum flew off, dad took over on the four eggs. All happened so quickly I couldn't grab a snap of both birds together, here's dad about to take his turn on the eggs:

Yep, just had a look at http://upp.hawkandowl.org/norwich-peregrines/norwich-cathedral-peregrine-live-web-cam-2015/ and the bird on the nest sounds almost like it's got constant hiccups, sounds rather like a squeaky hinge. Other than that, seems pretty alert.

The birds have been spotted close to Strathallan Castle in Perthshire, where the festival is due to take place in July. As a protected species, it is illegal to disturb them during breeding season.

Great picture.
Looks like little one in the middle is being squeezed away from food

Three weeks on.... (http://upp.hawkandowl.org/norwich-peregrines/norwich-cathedral-peregrine-live-web-cam-2016/)

There are still four chicks, one of them still smaller than the others.
Dad's doing the feeding now because mum got chased off, apparently (Forum (http://www.forum.hawkandowl.org/groups/norwich-peregrines/))

Was good to see dad noticeably favouring the smaller chick at breakfast time

They're back!!

The female who was annoying the nesting pair last year has got her man (shall we call her Jolene?)
She's sharing incubation duties with poor old dad from last year
There were four eggs, but now there's only three

Thanks Tony - one of the highlights of the year!   :btu:

Not much going on at the moment though.  Bird lying on eggs, breathing.

On the same site there is a camera on the Bath peregrines, has a good view of the nest with one chick already hatched. Apparently same parents as last year with a year old son helping with incubation duties and babysitting his little sibling. Nature is wonderful  :)
