The rivers in Zagorohoria have frozen

The river of Voidomatis in Zagorohoria, in the Epirus region, froze, offering trekkers the opportunity to promenade on ice. Despite the sunlight, temperatures in many areas of Epirus have dropped under zero. According to the Athens Observatory meteo station, the lowest temperature -10.4C was recorded in eastern Zagori.

Siberian High pressure system to hit Greece from Thursday

Meteorologists on Wednesday warned that a high-pressure system from Siberia is expected to sweep into Greece on Thursday, bringing freezing temperatures and snow to many parts of the country, including the capital.

According to forecasts so far, temperatures in Athens will drop below the 0-Celsius mark for about three days from Friday, with the wind-chill factor making it feel like -10 Celsius in the capital’s northern suburbs and mountains. In other parts of the country that are accustomed to wintry conditions, the wind-chill factor is expected to be as low as -25 Celsius.

Operation under way to rescue snowbound shepherds on Skopelos

A team of recue workers and soldiers was dispatched from the central Greece town of Volos to the northwestern Aegean island of Skopelos on Thursday to rescue dozens of shepherds who have been trapped by heavy snowfall since Saturday.

A large part of Skopelos has been without power and water since the weekend as snowstorms and strong winds damaged electricity pylons, which also supplied power to water pumps.

Temperatures drop below 0 Celsius in northern Greece

Northern Greece was gripped by another cold front on Friday with temperatures dropping below zero in many areas.

The lowest temperatures were recorded in Nevrokopi at -18 degrees Celsius, Ptolemaida at -9 degrees and Florina at -7.
