Eighty refugees arrive on Kefalonia

A boat carrying 80 refugees, among them 20 children, reached the Ionian island of Kefalonia safely Thursday after being intercepted by coast guards shortly before it arrived on the shores of Aghia Ierousalim beach.

The refugees were examined by doctors from the island’s hospital who gave them the all-clear. They were taken to a safe location in Argostoli before being transported to Athens later in the day.

No word of where they were from? Maybe trying to escape from Zakynthos?

Could well be, Roger:

Greek party hotspots turning toxic
Thousands of young travelers take to the beaches of Greece each year to find sun, fun and increasingly wreak havoc. But could the death of a US tourist mean the party is over? Anthee Carassava reports from Athens.

Locals blame foreign tour operators for luring droves of 18-to-30-year-olds to the island on cheap package deals promising unruly, hedonistic holidays fueled by binge-drinking, risky sexual encounters and non-stop partying. "Once the clock strikes midnight," Theodosis told DW, "anything goes. It's dicey."

And, it's scary.

With more than 100 bars lining a mile-long strip of neon-nightlife, Laganas is already boasting a 28 percent increase in visitors this year. But still suffering under a financial crisis, which is now in its seventh year, authorities have few resources with which to manage the mayhem. Budget cuts have shut down a local police precinct, leaving less than half a dozen officers to patrol the strip. A shortage of state chemists has also halted the routine testing of potentially tampered alcohol.

In May this year, a British holidaymaker revealed that she ended up blind and suffering from severe kidney failure after consuming rogue drinks spiked with anti-freeze at a popular Laganas bar. The 20-year-old girl said she had eight vodka cocktails on an organized bar crawl.

A bit of more positive news from Zakynthos: Archelon, a society for the protection of the loggerhead turtle, has announced the first new arrivals of the season hatched on Zakythnos on Friday, 21 July, according to ekathierini.

There's some info in the report that could equally apply to Kef:

Quote
Only one in 1,000 baby Caretta-caretta survives the first few days from hatching, Archelon said, urging citizens not to endanger the sensitive animals any further.

“In the event that you do see turtles hatching during the day, the only way you should help is by brushing the hot sand away from their path to the sea and holding some form of shade over it to protect them from the sun,” Archelon advised in an announcement on Wednesday. “It is very important that you don’t wet them, because any contact with water may make them believe they are already in the sea. Also, do not attempt to lift them or touch them, as that first race to the sea is important for them to strengthen their flippers so they can swim.”

Wouldn't it be easier to simply build a wall around such shit piles as Laganas, Kavos Faliraki et al.  You could then throw them in at the start of the "holiday" and at the end of the week or fortnight transport survivors in cattle trucks back to where they came from and sweep up the corpses and feed them to the next tranche of mental defectives as kebabs.  Any one trying to escape would, of course, be shot on sight and fed into the mixer.

Faliraki?  Wow, 90's throwback there Ari!

I believe it's back to being a sedate(ish) seaside town these days.

Hi Jed, been talking to someone just back from Rhodes Town who told me that Faliraki was no better than it used to be.  I have no intention of popping over to find out.
