Elephants Once Roamed Greece’s Pinios River Valley

Today’s placid scenes along the verdant shores of Greece’s Pinios River, in Thessaly, belie its ancient history as the home of hippopotamuses, bison and even elephants, according to geologist/paleontologist and professor Athanassios Athanassiou.

His recent study, entitled “The Paleolithic World of Pinios,” describes numerous fossilized remains of mammals discovered in the Pinios River basin which are between 30,000 and 45,000 years old.

Ropoto: Inside Greece’s Sinking Ghost Town
Watch “Ropoto: Greece’s Sinking Ghost Town,” a documentary about an abandoned village in central Greece that suffered an unprecedented natural disaster.

Ropoto was once a thriving village and home to 300 families, but a landslide in 2012 turned the village into a ghost town.

Today, forgotten by people and authorities, Ropoto’s terrain is still sinking, slowly moving the half-standing structures.

Flimsy foundations and steep inclines have been blamed for the disaster, which was first initiated by the village unable to push rainwater out to the surrounding stream.

Our 12-minute documentary shows homes and communal properties sitting askew on the hills, rendered uninhabitable.
