January sales branded ‘deeply dishonest’ as retailers raise prices
Nearly half of products more expensive in January than in the six months before

Analysis by PriceSpy, a website that tracks prices across more than 6,000 online retailers, found 46pc of products were more expensive at the start of January compared with the preceding six months.

A Samsung 4K Ultra HD LCD Smart TV, currently on sale at Currys for £499, was on sale for £479 in April, according to PriceSpy. A Krups Nespresso VertuoPlus coffee machine, on sale for £180 at John Lewis, was £164.99 in October.

PriceSpy previously warned shoppers that retailers often inflated prices in the run-up to key sales periods, such as Black Friday or Boxing Day and January sales, so that they could be seen to offer large discounts.

Consumer champion Martyn James said retailers were being “deeply dishonest” by suggesting their January sales items were genuine discounts – and called for greater regulation in the sector.
