You'll need £100 'car insurance' for lawnmowers, says EU

Elderly wheelchair users, gardeners with ride-on lawnmowers and golfers driving motorised caddies may now need to take out car insurance as a 43-year-old European directive has resurfaced.

The obscure rule has been in place for decades but was interpreted to cover all motorised vehicles in a recent court case. Details are still emerging as to how British insurers will adapt.

The Department for Transport is discussing with industry body, the Association of British Insurers, to clarify which types of vehicles will need to be insured and at what level.

Under UK law, "niche" motorised vehicles such as mobility scooters and sit-on lawnmowers do not require the same level of insurance as a car or motorbike.

Lawnmowers, for example, only need cover if they are driven in public places and mobility scooters can drive on roads without insurance.

But European judges have said that the directive from 1972 clashes with these rules and that similar vehicles should have at least third-party car insurance.

We checked out the string of beaches around Lourdas Bay and found plenty of good restaurants... The popular Skala beach is just at the end of the bay... and the area is lined with tavernas.

Enjoyable excursions to the countryside took us to the ruined hilltop castle of St George, near Peratata, and the monastery of St Ayos.

The Monastery of Saint Geronimo is situated in a vine-clad valley north-east of the castle.

Apart from the blooper about Lourdas and Skala being either ends of the same bay it's not a bad article. (OK, OK I know as bloopers go it's a pretty big one!!)

No, not too bad,once you take away the obligatory plugs for accommodation, tavernas and bars - and even they weren't as OTT as some. And no claim that Fiskardo is now anything but a scenic tourist trap. Don't reckon that article will cause Saint Geronimo to rise up and get on the war path.

This bomb fell in our back garden in Ilford and did not explode. The street was evacuated while it was defused. I always remember the crater it left where it was dug out.
