More than 2 million British travellers able to avoid 14-day quarantine after travelling abroad
Exclusive: two weeks of strict self-isolation will not apply to police, bus drivers and dentists

One week before the UK’s first blanket quarantine is imposed, The Independent can reveal that at least 2 million people will qualify for exemption because of their jobs.

According to the wording in the government’s list of exemptions, bus drivers, dentists and police officers will be among the professions to dodge 14 days of self-isolation when they travel to the UK from 8 June onwards. There is no need to have been working on official international duties; the indemnity applies for ordinary holiday trips.

Health officials make last-minute plea to stop lockdown easing in England

Senior public health officials have made a last-minute plea for ministers to scrap Monday’s easing of the coronavirus lockdown in England, warning the country is unprepared to deal with any surge in infection and that public resolve to take steps to limit transmisson has been eroded.

The Association of Directors of Public Health (ADPH) said new rules, including allowing groups of up to six people to meet outdoors and in private gardens, were “not supported by the science” and that pictures of crowded beaches and beauty spots over the weekend showed “the public is not keeping to social distancing as it was”.

On Saturday and Sunday, parks and seafronts were packed as people anticipated the lifting of restrictions on what has been dubbed “happy Monday”.

Mining firm apologises for destruction of 46,000-year-old Aboriginal caves

The mining giant Rio Tinto has apologised after blowing up one of Australia’s oldest known Aboriginal sites, in what has been described as an “incomprehensible” mistake.

The Juukan Gorge caves, in the north of Western Australia, are a sacred Aboriginal heritage site with evidence of human occupation stretching back 46,000 years. The two cave systems were the only inland site in Australia to show evidence of continual human occupation through the last Ice Age and numerous ancient artefacts have been recovered there.

But the Juukan Gorge caves were also on the site of Rio Tinto’s Brockman 4 iron ore mine.

Despite a seven-year battle to protect the site by the local custodians of the land, the Puutu Kunti Kurrama and Pinikura People (PKKP), the demolition went ahead on 24 May.

Rio Tinto have apologised for deliberately destroying the caves, so all's OK  :iroll:
