Cyber crimes police warns of malware spate

The cyber crimes unit of the Greek Police on Friday issued an announcement to Internet users alerting them to a recent spike in malware attacks via e-mail.

The announcement warned users not to open e-mails coming from an unknown source and to be wary of messages containing attachments in the form of .doc, .xls, .pdf with macro commands.

The Dridex malware is designed to steal users’ personal information such as usernames and passwords, allowing attackers to break into bank accounts and make cash withdrawals.

The experts advise anyone who suspects they may have fallen victim to the malware to use another computer to change all their usernames and passwords on social media and web banking services.

They also encourage the public to report any suspicious e-mails via the 11188 hotline or by e-mail at ccu@cybercrimeunit.gov.gr.
