One in 10 British tourists have fallen victim to holiday crime, ITV Tonight reveals

In Athens in Greece, locals and tourists alike have fallen for the fake tour scam.

They book a very cheap tour after receiving a flier. When the day or the time comes for their tour it does not materialize.

The police advise to check for online reviews e.g. tripadvisor, to check for the Greek National Tourism Organisation sign and keep in mind that if something seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Not too much to worry about there but a bigger problem, also subject of the ITV article, are fake accommodation websites such as greekvillaescapes.com

Nick Cooper, of Villa Plus, added: “I warned about Greek Villa Escapes by starting a TripAdvisor thread last month.

“But the crooks complained and Trip Advisor responded by banning my account and deleting all the warnings, despite me showing clear evidence that they are crooks.

“After 30 years in this industry, I’ve never seen such a disgraceful attitude by big companies to consumer protection.”

Fraudsters also increasingly target popular sites such as Owners Direct, Airbnb and HomeAway, which list hundreds of holiday homes to rent.
