UK snow: Power and travel disruption across country

Heavy snow has led to power cuts and disrupted air, rail and road travel in many parts of the UK.

The deepest snow recorded was 30cm (12in) in Sennybridge, near Brecon, while High Wycombe saw 17cm.

Snow is forecast to remain in Northern Ireland and Scotland but give way to icy conditions overnight elsewhere. Met Office yellow "be aware" warnings for ice affect England and Wales.

UK weather forecast: Britain to be hit with Arctic blast on Christmas Day as plunging temperatures bring cold snap

The UK is set to be hit with a blast of cold air from the Arctic Sea on Christmas Day as temperatures plunge into another cold snap.

Weather experts said most of Britain will see a mild, rainy and breezy December 25 but throughout the evening temperatures will drop as a band of colder polar maritime air pushes in from Greenland.

Parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and Cornwall can expect a chill by Christmas Day night while London and much of England will feel the freeze on Boxing Day.

“On Christmas Day the whole of the country is in double figures,” said Met Office forecaster Oli Claydon but by December 26 temperatures will drop to 4C in the north of the UK and 9C in the south.

Temperatures will stay low as the week progresses, forecasters said.

UK weather latest: Storm Dylan bears down as forecasters warn of potential for 'injuries and danger to life'

Forecasters are warning road, rail and air travellers to expect more travel chaos over the New Year period after Friday's stormy and wintry weather caused damage to buildings and an airport to close.

Meteorologists say disruption may occur across the country as 2017 draws to a close. Winds from Storm Dylan could cause danger to life as 80mph gusts hurl debris through the air, the Met Office said.

Heavy downpours are also predicted to blight much of south-east Wales, plus south-western, central and southern England over the weekend.

With a yellow warning for heavy rain issued by the Met Office from 6pm on Saturday to 9am on Sunday, up to 25mm is predicted as likely to fall, while up to 40mm could be seen in some spots.

Storm Eleanor: Britain braced for 80mph winds

Britain is to experience wind gusts of up to 80mph, the Met Office has said, as Storm Eleanor heads for the nation's shores.

The fifth named storm of the season will bring a "very windy" spell to the UK on Tuesday night and Wednesday, forecasters said.

The Met Office has issued several national severe weather warnings due to the potential for travel disruption.

Deputy chief forecaster Dan Harris added that next weekend could bring a return of colder conditions with a risk of frost, ice and wintry conditions, particularly in the north.

He added: "It could remain more unsettled in the south."

Travel disruption as high winds and snow hit UK

Severe gales have been causing disruption to much of the UK - with gusts of up to 83 mph (134 kph).

Police in several areas, including Lincolnshire, Norfolk and Gloucestershire, have reported fallen trees on or near roads.

Damage to overhead electric wires is causing problems for train services in the Midlands, and drivers are being warned to take extra care on the roads.

In East Anglia and south east England more than 59,000 homes have lost power.

In Scotland, police are urging motorists to drive with "extreme caution" in the wintry conditions.

Rail commuters are facing delays in London, Wales, Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Buckinghamshire, Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire. In Sydenham, south east London, a train has hit a tree.

UK weather: Icy blast to bring snow and sub-zero temperatures across Britain
'Children won't have enough snow to be able to build a snowman, but the bulk of the population will at least see flakes falling from the sky.'

Temperatures are set to plummet as low as -7C with swathes of the UK being told to expect snow and ice in the days ahead.

The weekend got off to a damp and cold start, but while forecasters say the rain will peter out heading into Sunday, with skies getting brighter, much of the east of Britain will wake up to icy patches tomorrow.

And from Sunday evening, the risk of sleet and snow throughout the country rises.
