Local authority workers to strike Monday

Local authority workers will go on strike on Monday in protest at a series of accidents suffered by garbage collectors.

The union representing local authority workers, POE-OTA, called the strike on Friday after the 53-year-old driver of a municipal garbage truck was crushed when he lost control of his vehicle near the capital’s main landfill in Fyli, northwestern Athens.

Not clear what form of industrial action but possible strike by posties on Wednesday (probably won't make much difference to Roger and those in Katelios area!):

Major restructuring plan for Greek Post envisions closing of 200 offices; voluntary retirement for 2,800 workers

A major restructuring plan for debt-laden Greek Post (EL.TA) features the closing of 200 offices around the country and the gradual early voluntary retirement of more than 1,800 employees in 2019 alone.

Conversely, the union representing postal workers is opposed to further staff reductions, with an industrial action set for Wednesday.

Greek postal workers call one-day strike over cost-cutting plans

Workers at the Greek postal service (ELTA) are walking off the job on Wednesday in protest at plans to further reduce spending in the state-run company.

ELTA workers say these plans include firing 2,300 employees at the cash-strapped organization and shutting down 220 more branches, which will leave many parts of the country without a post office, including rural areas that already have limited access to banks and other services.

Sounds dire.  Roger here continues to report an almost all st non-existent service and he's not that far out in the sticks.  As I posted here several years ago: ELTA - Expecting Letters, Totally Absurd.

There's a job here if anyone wants it. Trouble is, no one can afford to do it. We had two letters in December dated last June. Someone must have sent a Christmas card?

Could you have a PO box in Argostoli and call in once per month?

It's a possibility HiFi, but there is the question of all the mail that seems to have gone missing over the last 6 months. I think the solution would be to have a collection point in each village. Sorting in Poros PO would then be a much simpler operation.

Or, the Greek version, Tony: ΕΛ.ΤΑ. = Ελληνική Ταλαιπωρία...  :oki:  Apparently, the Greek Post Office and the Greek State Electricity Board (ΔΕΗ) are fighting like cat and dog about some scam involving people paying their electricity bills at their post office and the monies not being passed on to the Electricity Board but being pocketed (or so it is reported), with the result that people's electricity supply has been variously cut off and others have lost the 15% rebate we get for paying bills on time.  It appears that - inter alia - Kilkis post office is to be closed and all its employees sacked as a result.  Amazing  .  Get the most from your post...

Ferry strike to disrupt Ionian services

There will be no ferry services Monday between Corfu, Igoumenitsa, Paxoi and the Diaponteia islands, as dockworkers walk off the job.

The union of local dockworkers organized a strike this week instead of on May 1, when the rest of the country’s ferry boats remained tied up at port.

Not clear if the strike will affect the inter-Ionian islands ferry Azimut.

It is about time these striking idiots lost their jobs and someone stood up to them! we have been affected three times and it has cost us a lot of money. i for one will never book a Greek ferry again, this is like the unions in Britain in the 70s, action is needed.
