Circular adds to burden on self-employed

Although several issues remain unclear, it appears that many self-employed insured after 1992 will be hit especially hard, as they are required to pay double contributions, both as salary workers and as self-employed professionals.

Gov’t rail talk raises eyebrows

Just a couple of days after the signing of the concession of railway service operator Trainose to its Italian peer, Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, the government is speaking about the creation of a new state railway company through Gaiaose, the railway properties company supervised by the Transport Ministry.

Second-hand tyres put lives at risk, councils warn

In 2015, there were 16 deaths and 908 road casualties that involved illegal, defective or under-inflated tyres, according to government figures.

Durham County Council officers found that just one of the 39 tyres they checked at various traders bore the required "part-worn" tyre marking, with 25 tyres having problems that could impair safety.

Ten tyres had unsafe repairs, nine were over 10 years old and one was 23 years old.

Mark Zuckerberg is suing Hawaiian land owners to secure his 700-acre island getaway

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is going to great lengths to protect his privacy on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, where he purchased a 700-acre plot of land in 2014 for more than $100 million. Starting last month, Zuckerberg began filing lawsuits against Hawaiian land owners who own small slices of his estate that were passed down from generation to generation, according to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. As many as eight suits have been filed against hundreds of people, some of whom are dead.

The Facebook chief is using a legal maneuver called "quiet title and partition," which forces owners of undeveloped land to sell the property in a public highest-bidder auction.

Zuckerberg is likely more interested in securing his land than he is in swindling Hawaiian land owners out of a few thousand dollars. The paper said sources involved with Kauai land dealings expect Zuckerberg to pay a fair amount or even an especially generous sum to any and all land owners in proceeding auctions. Zuckerberg’s legal team is also legally mandated to try and locate living relatives of deceased land owners to ensure they can participate in the auction.
