Greeks in Australia

How Greek migration to Melbourne shaped our city

VISIT the suburb of Oakleigh in Melbourne’s south east and you’re likely to smell cooked rotating lamb and sweet, hard-to-pronounce desserts (galaktoboureko anyone?) in the streets. Oakleigh thrives thanks to its strong population of Greek migrants who have aged alongside the suburb.

But it’s not just Oakleigh — Greek migrants significantly helped shape Melbourne into Australia’s cultural hub, University of Melbourne Australian cultural historian Professor Joy Damousi said.

The first Greeks to ever travel to Australia were supposedly seven sailors convicted of piracy by the British naval court. Like so many other convicts, they were transported to Australia in the early 19th century.

After that, the first Greek migration boom came in the Gold Rush — the 1901 census recorded 878 people born in Greece.
