Contraband cigarettes account for 22 pct of consumption

Greece remains the biggest market in the European Union for contraband cigarettes, according to a pan-European report made public last week following the discovery by Greek authorities of three illegal tobacco processing factories in May and June.

In 2019, more than 3 billion contraband cigarettes are believed to have been smoked in Greece, accounting for 22 percent of tobacco consumption, the largest rate in the European Union.

Stricter lockdown measures have been announced in Leicester because of a rise in coronavirus cases in the city.

The loosening of restrictions for pubs and restaurants will also not be taking place in the city on Saturday.

Greece: Plan to rein in protests triggers protests

Greece’s center-right government announced plans Monday to impose tighter controls on public demonstrations that frequently block traffic and turn violent.

But political opponents say they plan to defeat the proposals with mass demonstrations.

The country has a long tradition of public protests, and several recent rallies have been held in support of the Black Lives Matter marches in the United States.

Under draft legislation submitted to parliament late Monday, participation in a protest rally held without police permission could be punishable by up to a year in prison.

Left-wing opposition parties, including a party that led the previous government, strongly criticized the plan, describing it as being reminiscent of a right-wing dictatorship in Greece between 1967 and 1974.

Apparently Greece has a cricket federation. I've sat and watched cricket on Corfu - just as non-exciting as in the UK! Maybe one day Kef will have a cricket - and rugby - team. More info: cricket.gr

Rental e-scooters to be made legal on roads in Great Britain from Saturday

Rental e-scooters will become legal on roads in Great Britain from Saturday, in a bid to ease pressure on public transport amid the coronavirus crisis.

The Department for Transport (DfT) said the first rentable e-scooters could be available next week, as it published guidance for e-scooter-for-hire firms.

The vehicles are banned on pavements, will be limited to 15.5mph and it is recommended that riders wear helmets.

Privately owned e-scooters remain illegal on roads.

Riders will need a full or provisional car, motorcycle or moped licence to use the vehicles, and they must be aged 16 or over.

US buys up world stock of key Covid-19 drug
No other country will be able to buy remdesivir, which can help recovery from Covid-19, for next three months at least

The US has bought up virtually all the stocks for the next three months of one of the two drugs proven to work against Covid-19, leaving none for the UK, Europe or most of the rest of the world.

Experts and campaigners are alarmed both by the US unilateral action on remdesivir and the wider implications, for instance in the event of a vaccine becoming available.

The deal was announced as it became clear that the pandemic in the US is spiralling out of control.

The US has recorded more than 2.5 million confirmed cases of Covid-19.

Climate crisis: UK temperatures could regularly hit 40C by end of the century, Met Office study warns

A Met Office study into temperature trends in the UK has found within the next 80 years the UK could regularly experience temperatures of 40C as global greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise, driving the increased likelihood of heatwaves.

Currently the highest temperature ever recorded in the UK is 38.7C, which was set in Cambridge in July 2019.

Recycling laggard Greece to discard single-use plastic

Greece has drafted a bill banning the use of a range of single-use plastics, from takeaway coffee cups to cotton buds, ahead of an EU deadline in 2021, the government said on Tuesday.

Greeks, who are heavy coffee drinkers, annually require 350 million plastic cups and 2 billion plastic bottles, the environment ministry said. In the European Union, about 80 percent of the litter that ends in the sea, endangering marine life, is plastic.

The EU is to ban a range of single-use plastic items by 2021.

Environment Minister Kostis Hatzidakis... also announced a set of national measures, including a 0.04 euro surchage for the provision of plastic cups and food containers from 2022 and water facilities in public spaces from July 2021.

From 2023, consumers will get a refund if they return plastic bottles.
