Greece Rolls Out Action Plan For Road Safety

“Our interest in road safety issues should be self-evident. Greece is above the EU average in deaths and serious road accidents. This is exactly what we are trying to achieve with the National Action Plan for Improved Road Safety,” Greece’s Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis shared on social media.

On Wednesday, he presented the plan which aims to rectify Greece’s poor statistical record of road accidents.

The €450 million program will be financed by the European Investment Bank, and seeks targeted improvements in 7,000 highly dangerous locations across the country.

'We'll do much better': Greek PM sees tourism rebound in summer

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has forecast a strong rebound in tourism this summer, saying speedy vaccination drives in key markets including Britain and Israel will pave the way for tourists to return despite the current industry gloom.

Tourism, which accounts for about 20% of the Greek economy and employs one in five workers, collapsed last year as the coronavirus pandemic sent its revenues slumping to 4 billion euros ($4.8 billion) from 18 billion in 2019.

Ferry companies fear support may be too little

Kathimerini understands that a ministerial decision has been signed for the state to support coastal shipping companies to the tune of 15 million euros.

This compensation for the restrictions placed on traveling is believed to be the first half of support over the first quarter of the year, given that the government also handed €30 million out to ferry operators last year for the first lockdown.

However, the industry is concerned this will not suffice for even a skeleton service in the country, which needs island connections, given also the higher fuel costs.

Companies fear the tourism rebound forecast for this year won’t come.
