Among the many problems brought on by the Greek debt crisis is a surging population of stray dogs.

Animal charities say there are now more than a million strays in Greece because people are simply abandoning pets they can no longer afford to keep.

There are fears it could lead to the spread of disease if the problem is not tackled soon, as Emilia Papadopoulos reports.

Dentist rescues over 200 abandoned dogs following the Greek financial crisis

One man has taken it upon himself to rescue hundreds of dogs who have been abandoned following the Greek financial crisis.

Theoklitos Proestakis, known locally as Takis, runs a shelter in the south of Crete and has saved more than 200 dogs over the last three years.

Takis, a former dentist, has given up everything to care for the dogs after he found himself "stunned" by the suffering the animals were going through in his town of Lerapetra.

At the moment he has over 150 dogs in his care.
