Just what we need .Watching tv  its 3months since the first problems with the sea surges on the East coast and then after that we had all the rain and winds up to end of Feb. It showed the Somerset levels and they are all still under feet of water. Some people returning to their homes for the first time since Christmas to have a look at the state of them were overcome. Can't imagine what it must be like and how long it is going to take for them to dry out. Every day of sunshine and warmth without any rain will be more than welcome. Hopefully we are on the turn!!

A metre-long fish that escaped from an aquatic centre during recent flooding has been found.

The sturgeon, named Steve, swam out of World of Water in Romsey, Hampshire when it was inundated by flood water in early February.

But now staff at a car wash a mile from the centre have discovered him in a deep puddle.

A larger koi carp fish named Chadwick escaped at the same time but, despite sightings, has not yet been retrieved.

Centre manager Mark Bradbury said he was "hugely relieved" Steve had been recovered and "only a little worse for wear for his travels."

Hmmm.  Steve the Sturgeon could start a trend.  How about Holly the halibut and Colin the cod.  That koi should of course be called Ratner in honour of the former company CEO who said his products were a load of old carp, as I recall.

Tony

PS lovely day here about 15 deg.  Just got in from the dogs taking me for a walk.

Wettest winter on record could cause tick invasion, say scientists

If the misery caused by the storms and floods of the wettest winter on record was not enough, scientists believe it could now lead to an invasion of ticks.

The parasites feed on the blood of humans and animals and their irritating bites can spread illnesses including Lyme disease.

Tick numbers and incidences of the diseases they carry have increased substantially over the last two decades, according to the School of Biological Sciences at Bristol University.

Warm winters and wet summers provide the perfect breeding ground for the arachnids.

Ticks should be removed as soon as possible to reduce the risk of Lyme disease, which can affect the skin, joints, heart and nervous system.

Public Health England estimates there are 2,000 to 3,000 cases of Lyme disease in England and Wales each year, with up to 20 per cent picked up abroad.

Some of the UK’s most famous National Parks, like the New Forest and the Lake District, are known to have high numbers of ticks.

Threw it down here for about 45 minutes this morning followed by less heavy rain.  Not as bad as in the warnings, though.  :)

Lightning storms as heatwave warning remains

Lightning struck more than 3,000 times in two hours in the UK, as a heatwave warning remains in place for parts of the country.

Storms hit southern England overnight, and BBC Weather said the rain would move north across the UK during Friday.

Temperatures in parts of the UK are set to climb beyond 30C (86F) later.

Friday could top Thursday as the hottest day of the year so far, and the Met Office has issued a heatwave alert for southern England and the Midlands.

Public Health England said elderly people and those with long-term illnesses should take particular care.

The heatwave is continuing here but possibly temperatures a bit lower tomorrow and Sunday.  I recorded 44C in the back garden on Tuesday evening - shade was 29C.

A £10,000 reward has been offered to anyone who helps police track down two men who were filmed kicking a squirrel into the Grand Canyon.

The two men, who are believed to be French, lured the animal to the edge of the canyon using a trail of breadcrumbs before one of them kicked it off.

A drop in temperatures in the UK has prompted a last minute rush for overseas holidays, according to Thomson and First Choice.

The brands, both part of TUI, say online searches have jumped as UK temperatures plummet to below 20 degrees for the first time since June and the forecast in many parts of the country is bleak and wet for the bank holiday weekend.

That when you're away on Kef?

Of course, it happens every time.  We are visiting for the whole of June next year so be prepared for biblical weather in Kef and the best summer since 1976 in UK.
