On the lash in Saudi

A UK pensioner caught with homemade wine in Saudi Arabia could receive 360 lashes - a punishment his family say would kill him.  Karl Andree, 74, has already spent more than a year in prison since being arrested by Saudi religious police.  His daughter Kirsten Piroth told BBC News her father - who has suffered from three types of cancer - "would not survive" the punishment lashes.

Other expats say you can drink and even produce the stuff in expat compounds, just don't drive it round or try to sell it.  http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-34516143

Very unpleasant for him, I'm sure, but his wife's seriously ill in the UK, he's running booze in Saudi and, what, the British government is supposed to send the gunboats in?

This guy is an ex oil worker who has made his few bob out there no problem. But like all western workers offered jobs out in the gulf you are told in no uncertain terms the laws and rules that apply whilst you are out there makin your (tax free) wonga. Got three mates out there at the moment who don't have a problem at all. One of them is home next week to put his liver through its paces around Liverpool for a few days before he goes back and stays dry. As for the plonker in question tough shit !

A British man who was imprisoned for possessing alcohol in Saudi Arabia will be released within a week, Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond has said.
Karl Andree, 74, was arrested by Saudi religious police after being found in possession of homemade wine.
He has been in prison for more than a year and his family feared he would also be flogged, although Saudi officials denied this would happen.

Suspect he may not be going for a celebration down the pub!
