Phrygana

The dry hillsides of Greece’s islands have long resisted the developments of modern agriculture that have eradicated the sense of wilderness from much of Europe. Greeks describe this wild, aromatic scrubland as phrygana, a word that in itself has an almost mystical quality and evokes the essence of the Mediterranean landscape. The modern concept of wildness is one that repels human interference and yet the phrygana is a very human landscape, one that has been gently sculptured over millennia by man’s influence. It was the subtlety of these sun-baked hills and their increasing mistreatment that caught the imagination of a young Thomas Doxiadis in the 1980s.
