Medicane to reach Greece on Thursday night

A Mediterranean hurricane heading towards Greece will reach the southern Ionian Sea on Thursday evening instead of Friday, the meteorological service (Meteo) of the Athens National Observatory said on Thursday.

Latest I've heard, Kef schools closed tomorrow and ferries likely confined to port.

Weather reports today are calling the phenomenon a Cyclone rather than a Hurricane

So does that change it from a Medicane to a Mediclone?

Whatever it is, it's bleedin' windy outside!

No ferries yesterday or today. Winds at sea expected up to Beaufort 11 (violent storm). Cyclone gradually declining and headed eastwards. Much calmer tomorrow.
The situation at midday Friday.

36-Foot Waves Expected as Greece Braces for Cyclone Hit on Saturday

Greek meteorologists said on Friday that the eye of the Mediterranean cyclone is expected to reach the south shores of the Peloponnese between 15:00 and 18:00 local time on Saturday.

The National Observatory of Athens’ weather service meteo.gr, released models of the cyclones’s expected course and rainfall intensity over the next 48 hours.

The meteo.gr models have also predicted waves exceeding 11 meters (36 feet) in height between the Peloponnese and Crete.

Passengers are advised to contact port authorities or their travel agents before departure to ensure that scheduled journeys will be taking place.

The civil protection agency has issued a list of instructions to the general public on how to protect themselves from the storm, calling on them to:
- Secure any objects that might be blown away and cause damage or injury
- Ensure that building drainpipes are not blocked and in working order
- Avoid crossing streams or torrents, either in vehicles or on foot, during storms, rain and for some time after rainfall has stopped
- To avoid working outdoors and activities at sea or in coastal areas during the storm
- Take cover immediately in the case of hail, either in a building or car, and to not leave safe spaces until they are certain that the storm has passed. Hail also poses a serious danger to animals.
- Avoid passing under big trees, sign posts that might blow away or areas where lighter objects might be pulled free or fall on the ground.
- Closely follow the instructions issued by state agencies and emergency services, such as the police and the fire brigade
For information and announcements concerning the prevailing situation and state of the roads, citizens are advised to consult the police website www.astynomia.gr

A little difficult to know how it will affect Kef but EMY, via meteoalarm.eu, are forecasting severe thunderstorms across the Eptanisa as a whole on Saturday.

Greece flights and ferries could be halted by Mediterranean cyclone known as 'medicane'

Airlines flying in southeast Europe have been warned of winds gusting to almost 100mph as a Mediterranean cyclone known as a “medicane” develops off the coast of Libya.

Eurocontrol, the Brussels-based organisation that coordinates flights over Europe, is warning of extremely high winds affecting the southern Greek islands.

Eurocontrol also warns that some smaller Greek airports could run out of fuel. It says that Fraport Greece, which runs 14 airports, “advises that end of season fuel is low at some airports”.

Pilots have been told: “Load fuel accordingly.”

Doesn't look to be any weather-related delays at Kef airport so far: https://www.efl-airport.gr/en/flights
