Greek wine goes back to basics to resist climate change

Thirty-eight years after he revived his family's small vineyard in northern Greece, Vangelis Gerovassiliou proudly gazes on his property that grows one of the country's most popular wines.

And after 45 years in the business, Gerovassiliou says that with a little local savvy, there are answers even to global warming.

"It's an opportunity for Greek winemakers to return to the original grape varieties, and to carefully choose the location of the vines on suitable land," he told AFP, adding that until recently, vineyards were planted "everywhere".

Growers in northern Greece, one of the country's top wine-producing areas, have been among the first nationally to be interested in the consequences of rising temperatures.

EU about to propose new migration agreement which will alleviate burden from Greece

Vice president of the European Commission, Margaritis Schinas said that the European Commission will propose a new migration and asylum agreement in order for all the state members to fairly share the burden and the pressure.

Schinas made the statement on Saturday during an interview with Greek public broadcaster ERT, adding that the intention was to reform the Dublin Agreement which, as he said, “does not offer any solidarity solution but, essentially, passes on to the first reception countries, as Greece, disproportional management migration burden”.

After Boy’s Diptheria Death, Child Vaccinations in Greece to be Mandatory

The death of an 8-year-old boy from diptheria – although he had been inoculated against the disease through eradicated 30 years earlier – and a growing social media movement against vaccinations has led Greece’s government to make injections required for children under four years old.

That is included in a Health Ministry bill being prepared, said the business newspaper Naftemporiki, after other diseases also believed to have been stamped out, including viruses, bacteria, measles and rubella are resurging because of people who don’t believe vaccinations work or think they are government conspiracies against them.
