Anti-Brexit lawyer clubs fox to death with baseball bat while wearing kimono
RSPCA calls for people to report ‘distressing incident’ after Jolyon Maugham tweets about the attack

A prominent barrister has sparked a backlash after revealing that he killed a fox with a baseball bat in his London garden.

Jolyon Maugham QC, who is known for fighting a series of legal cases concerning Brexit, wrote on Twitter that the animal had become trapped in protective netting around his chicken coop.

“Already this morning I have killed a fox with a baseball bat. How’s your Boxing Day going?” he wrote, adding that he was wearing a “a too small green kimono” at the time.

As followers started asking why he could not have released it or called a rescue charity, he said he “wasn’t sure what else to do”.

Asked whether the fox suffered, Mr Maugham said he “despatched him efficiently” and argued that killing animals “does come with the territory if you’re a meat eater”.

Low birth rates and high emigration leads to more school closures in Greece

As Greece’s population continues to decline due to low birth rates and high emigration, Greek newspaper Ethnos has reported that, because of this, schools and kindergartens have been closing in high numbers across the country.

The report says that because of the declining population size, between 2009 and 2014, the government closed 796 primary schools, 400 high schools, and 509 kindergartens. In addition, a further 14kindergartens and 9 primary schools will close by the end of next year.

And the issue is predicted to become worse.

Netherlands to drop 'Holland' as nickname

The Netherlands is gearing up to drop the moniker “Holland” as it rebrands itself in 2020.

Holland is a region of the Netherlands, but the two names are often used interchangeably to describe the northern European country.

From January, the Netherlands will officially drop “Holland” from all literature and marketing materials, so the country will only be referred to be its official name.

RSPCA appeal after French bulldog abandoned in Bristol while giving birth to dying puppies

The RSCPA are urgently appealing for information after a French bulldog was found in a "critical condition" giving birth to a dead puppy in Horfield, Bristol.

A member of the public discovered the abandoned dog on Friday 20th December. An investigation is now underway to find out how the pregnant brindle dog came to be left in this state.

She was named Mary by the team and is now receiving intensive round-the-clock care at the centre.

Booking.com agrees to EU demands to change travel offers

The European Commission said on Friday that Booking.com had committed to end “manipulative techniques” on its travel site, such as time-limits for making bookings and misrepresentation of discounts.

Booking.com would make the changes by June 16.

These include making clear that “last room available!” bookings referred only to Booking.com offers. The company would also stop presenting offers as having a time limit if the same price applied after the time limit expired.

The company should also ensure offers presented as discounts represented genuine savings, display the total price in a clear way and clearly indicate if accommodation was offered by a private host or a professional.
